Rectangle exhaust tips
Rectangle exhaust tips
Hi fellas,
I could use your help. Take a look at this picture, and let me know where I can get some rectangle exhaust tips:

I do not care to change the sound. The goal is to get some chrome or stainless steel on the back of the car. The current stock exhaust stops short about 3 inches. I'd love to have some new tips extended so they are flush with the body kit. I do not want them to stick out past the body kit.
If I add some tips, do they just weld on or does the stock tips need to be cut off? Also, if I extend these, they will most likely touch the body kit. Will the heat cause any problems?

Re: Rectangle exhaust tips
If you have the stock exhaust setup, you're going to have problems finding the tips you want. The stock tips are offset, and aftermarket tips mated to the stock catback wouldn't line up correctly. You could buy a pair of stock crome tips and replace the current ones, extend them as far/not as far as you want, but if you're going to go through all of that, might as well save up for a cat-back, let the car breath a little better, and have endless tip possibilities
Re: Rectangle exhaust tips
Thanks Ryan,
Tell me more. I don't have any tools to do any of this stuff so I guess I would take the parts to a garage to have them put it on? Do you know of any place where I could buy stock chromed tips or something similar?
If I went with a cat-back setup, what would that cost? The car is a 1998 Z28. Would the computer need to be retuned with a cat-back?

Re: Rectangle exhaust tips
You can get a cat-back for pretty cheap to really expensive. Prices range (for new units) from 300-900 usually. One of the cheaper ones that a lot of people like is the hooker system, a little on the quiet side, but nice deep rumble.
A lot of people argue that the GMMG is the best sounding system for the f-body, and will run you from 635 (group purchase on ls1tech.com with normal tips) to 850 new w/optional oval tips.
There are websites where you can listen to a bunch of differnet cat-backs with varying mods behind (well i guess in front) of them, but you really need to hear them in person to get a good idea. Do a search, there is no better source for cat-back info then this site probably.
Installing them is pretty easy. Jack the back of the car as high as you can safely get it. Cut off the old system. Place the new system on. Line up the tips. Most of the time you can get away with clamping everything on and not having to weld the system anywhere. Not really that hard as long as you have the right tools to cut the old system off.
If you are are money short, I'd go with a Hooker system, and then try to find some nice tips with a thick or rolled sidewall or something to compliment the kit. You could even get some stock style chrome tips off ebay, so it was look like chrome stock tips, but sound and perform very unstock
If you have some money to play around with, a GMMG system with their oval tips would look awesome, and sound amazing

Re: Rectangle exhaust tips
Ryan,
Thanks so much for the summary information. In my case, since this is just for appearance only, spending that much for the small chrome tips is not a wise option. Therefore, I think I'll be looking for just the tips option on the stock exhaust system. You say that it's possible to find some stock chromed tips? Anyone have any links or know of places where I can get some tips? I saw a few on ebay, but they don't look like they would work. Most of them are the wrong size.
