Question About Buying A 93-97 SS Hood

Im thinking about buying a 93-97 SS hood for my z28. How much hp would this add to my car? The brand that makes it is SunCoast anyone know or heard of them is there a better brand? And whats a good computer chip that will add 20+ Hp

Thanks

Wait a minute, your asking how much horsepower does a SS Hood make when you slap it on your Camaro? If you are asking that, then WOW! You don't make any! No disrespect but dont think like a Ricer. There minds are like if they add more stickers they will gain horsepower. When in reality you cant.

When you add a ram air functional ss hood you gain hp. I dont think im thinking like a ricer when i drive a z28 and my other cars are American and happen to know that a functional ram air ss hood does add hp. Maybe you just though i was just talking about the hood lol but this is the hood with the ram air interface air box.

Maybe i just didnt make things clear enough

At least 100 horsepower. Even more than that if you get SS emblems too.

You really need to add the SS spoiler to complete the optimal aerodynamic drag coefficient with the SS hood. Things might get unstable above 180mph if you add just the hood alone.

Well..... I'd have to agree with both sides here.....

You can gain horsepower by adding a new Hood (Weight Savings + slight air increase), as well as a chip.

BUT the OP is acting as though the simple mods he's asking about will suddenly make the car so much faster (+20 HP from a chip alone...)

You'll get 20 HP from a CHIP, if you have other mods, but they better include a cam or much more than intake / exhaust.... And I would guess that if you have to ask about chips and hoods, those are not present...

So hence the 'Ricer' comment.....

PS - There are quite a few nice looking hoods out there, but they are more aesthetic than performance modification

OH! Will you didn't explain nothing about the air box that comes stock in real SS Camaros. You do gain a few more thrust but nothing to serious. Its not like a drastic power change. I thought you meant just the SS Hood alone. On another note, yea I'm ok with people slapping SS Hoods on there Z28 or V6s, but the Z28 spoiler throws off the look. First thing I changed on My Z28 was the spoiler. Switched it for a real GM SS Spoiler. Took it from a wreck 02 SS. It was at a bargain at my local Camaro junkyard. For the hatch all intact ran me $470. It was already painted red, as my Z28 is red. Then I got me an aftermarket Hood.

The power gains you can get by spending $1K on a full SS hood, airbox, ducting, etc will be the same if you got a good quality CAI. The ducting losses from all the bends, plus the heat soaking from the intake manifold make the SS intake system basically for looks only.

My suggestion would be to just get a SS hood; but just use a good brand CAI instead of the SS airbox/ductwork.

As for a chip that will "add" 20Hp.... do some reading here... unless you have a '93 there is no "chip" the PCM is reprogrammed via a computer. And unless you have some other modifications (Headers, heads, cam, or similar) a reprogram is basically worthless. Reprogramming a PCM is used so your computer will properly work with the "upgraded" parts on the car and utilize them to their fullest potential.

Go do a lot of reading on here and the forums; theres much for you to learn grasshopper.

You might gain a horse or two, but you won't notice the difference.

A lot of people have argued that switch from the factory ram air to a CAI will actually show a minimal gain. I'm sure the factory ram air is less restrictive than the factory Z28 airbox though.

By hollowing the Cat Converter you will not gain 50 HP.

I think you'd be supprised... the Factory airbox compared to the SS RA setup have to be close to par on airflow... both suck. A CAI will be an inprovement over either setup.

I have a Suncoast SS hood on my 94 Z28. Fitment is perfect and I am very happy with the hood. However, I intially bought the SS airbox kit from Suncoast to go with the hood and it was made very poorly. It did not fit properly or seal properly. The way the airbox was manufactured looked like it would cause you to lose horsepower. I was not happy with it at all. I ended up going with the K&N CAI kit and I am pleased with the results of it. Using the K&N CAI also let me use the strut tower brace I had that I could not use with the SS airbox. I would recommend getting the hood, but not the SS airbox from Suncoast.

So if I get the ss hood and switch out my slp cai for the ss air box will I add 20+ hp as well. How much tq will this add to the car. And I will not forget the ss spoiler and the ss badges. I am sorry but I saw this question and laughed.

Okay so I was running the stock elbow and cai when I first finished my build (Waiting for the powder coater to finish the new elbow and cai). I had it dynoed on a fri. with the stock elbow and cai. And went back mon. (closed on weekends and did not get my dyno time in) and I made no changes to the car except I got and installed my new tfs elbow and slp cai and I gained 23hp and 17tq just off of those parts.

So what I am saying is almost anything is better than the stock cai so maybe you will see decent numbers off the swap "who knows". But a cai will be better than the ss air box IMO.
