Product review. Spoilerdepot.com SS spoiler.

Well i decided to try one of these 98+ SS spoilers a few weeks ago. It was about $330 painted and shipped, it sounded like a good deal at the time but im starting to reconsider my purchase. Maybe im expecting too much, but i want it to look good. I guess you get what you pay for. There are a few problems with it.

First of all there is a pretty large and noticeable crack in it near one of the rear supports, looks like a stress crack, as outlined in this picture.

Next there is a dimple in it near one of the mounting points on the drivers side, not sure if this is because it is directly above the screw hole or if is just a random defect. Outlined here.

Next, there are multiple ripples in the spoiler, they are hard to see in the picture but they can clearly be seen and felt when running anything over the spoiler, like when washing or waxing it. They can pretty much only be seen if looking directly at it in the right light. Again, its hard to see but here is a picture anyway. It can be seen better in the last 2 pics. These 2 were shot with the lights off and the flash on.

Next, when i first installed it, i thought the paint matched perfectly. But after seeing it in the right light and looking at it closely, I saw that it doesnt, as you can see here.

Next, on the passenger side, the spoiler does not sit flush with the rest of the deck lid, as you can see here.

Lastly, the hardware that they send with the spoiler cannot be used. The screws are to short and the washers are too small in diameter, so plan on spending some time and a few bucks at a hardware store.

I told them about the crack and i will be sending it back to them with a list of the problems to see if they can correct them, if not i think i will be going with a different spoiler.

Excellent report! What is going to make it or break it for me with this company is how they handle these problems. The price was right so I was considering getting one of these as well but now having 2nd thoughts. (I'd rather pay extra and have something that looks real good) The crack I can kinda understand because it COULD have happened in shipping. However, what concerns me more, are the things that were obviously there before they sent it... like that huge dimple. That should have never made it out the door to you. What this looks like is they have no quality control and/or the people working there take no pride in what they do and if a product doesn't come out right then rather than redo it, just send it off to the customer and hope they don't complain.

Hopefully they'll take care of ya... that thing really shouldn't have made it out the door IMO.

The benefit of having them paint it is that you don't have to screw with having it painted However, the downside, it appears, is they didn't take the time a good paint shop would take to prep it for paint. If they can't take the time to do a good job and still sell it for $330 then they need to raise the price or not offer painting at all.

The prepping should have caught these flaws and they could have been fixed fairly easily prior to paint. Good fiberglass companies have products which only require minimal prep and this prep time and checking things out is expected by paint shops (it is rare to have a "perfect" fiberglass piece!). So, it could be, that if they didn't put hardly any prep into that spoiler that the spoiler is of excellent quality and just their prep and paint department is no good. That one little dimple isn't too bad but what's bad is they painted it WITH the dimple!

Yes im talking to them right now, so hopefully i just got a crappy piece that shouldnt have made it out the door. Well see if the next one they send me is as bad.

Id like them to send me an unpainted one so my body shop can smooth it out and match the paint perfectly, since they painted my car, but they say that they can only send out an exact replica of what they sent me the first time.

So ill keep you guys updated, but it seems like they have good customer service so far, just sent me a bad piece.

Re: Product review. Spoilerdepot.com SS spoiler.

The majority of that is just **** poor prep work and like Brent said the crack may have been a shipping thing. You can see it wasn't there when they painted it. $380 is one hell of a deal though, i always thought those spoilers were more than that w/o paint. I hope it all works out for ya.

Also the fitment issues are just part of aftermarket fiberglass. Almost all fiberglass parts need some hand fitment by someone who knows what's going on.

I don't think it being unpainted is going to matter. That side of the spoiler is twisted, you can see it is high on the outside and low on the inside. That is a defect during the molding process.

If you get an unpainted one though it is easier to fit and finish it, which all AM fiberglass parts should get. And from the looks of it they just scuffed the gelcoat and sprayed it.

Bayer- I'd look at some other people who have that spoiler and see if that's just a defect that didn't get caught or if all of their spoilers fit like that.

Holy crap, I'm sorry to say it but YES, it looks like @ss !

I didn't go with them because I hate the tiny third brake light they come with (compared to a real SS spoiler) and went with thespoilercompany (ebay company) and had NONE of those problems...

Here's some pics of mine:

Re: Product review. Spoilerdepot.com SS spoiler.

UPDATE:

I recieved a new unpainted spoiler from them today and i can tell already that it is much better quality. The ripples and dents that were in it before are not there and neither is the crack. Im going to have the shop that painted my car paint it, they do good work so i know the paint will match and look great.

I will be sending the original spoiler back probably monday so i will let you guys know what i think of their return and warranty policy.

From my experiences, they have very good customer service and they back what they sell. Looks like i just got a bad spoiler.
