Preferred center console.
Preferred center console.
Well my console lid completely broke off the other day and id like to upgrade from the stock console i have now. What is the preferred center console to swap into these vehicles.
Re: Preferred center console.
Is there even a difference between the Chevy and Pontiac consoles?
As far as I know, I have an 02 FBody console, I don't think there's much of a difference, atleast not for automatic. But, since you're replacing due to the console lid breaking off, LS1 without a doubt. LS1's hinge is metal, so you won't have to worry about the cheap plastic hinge in the LT1 breaking off. Plus, 4 cup holders, 2 accessory plugs... very nice.

Re: Preferred center console.
I've got a 93 and a 97 Camaro and I'm fortunate enough to have the redesigned interior in the 97...it's really a lot better than the 93-96 style console and dash. The vents are a lot more effective and the added cupholder at the front is actually useful for something other than holding loose change. I also like the side opening console because it's not as cumbersome to swing out of your way to grab a CD, not to mention it's nowhere near as prone to breaking. I say the newer style dash is A+++++, as the ebayers would say.
So, all in all, the poll is incorrect since the newer console/dash design was in one year of the LT-1 cars.

My console didn't come with anything more than the console itself, shift plate, and lid... no mounting brackets or anything. Apparently there's mounting brackets so it mounts to the same spot where the LT1 tape holder mounts to (in the direct center of that cubby hole, you'll see the bolt I'm talking about). I've seen a few people just cut the two brackets off at the very front part of the console, I haven't done it myself yet but I probably will be doing that soon. The only true modification that you have to do is that the LS1 console has a peg in the center by the cup holder. On the LT1 vehicle, there is no hole for this peg. The peg helps with horizontal stability of the console. You can either cut the peg off and let the console wiggle a bit, or you can just get a drill bit for slightly larger than the peg and drill through the metal bracket that's there. I drilled the hole and the console is quite rigid... I guess the LT1 isn't as rigid? In all honesty, it's been so long since I've done this mod (It was the first interior mod I did!) that I can't even remember what my original 94 console felt like as far as how rigid and stable it was.
Hope that helps!
Re: Preferred center console.
Go with the 97+ console, they're the same for both birds and Camaros. The 93-96 Pontiac console is junk as well the cup holder is non functional just like the early Camaro cup holder.
