Performance Increase From Wheel Size?

I currently have 16' rims on my 1998 V6 camaro. I plan on going to 18 or 19 inch rims. Will I see an increase in performance from the increase in size?

Nope not in size but in width. Your v6 is wearing a 235 tire, If you were to run 235s on a 19 its still going to be the same. You need to increase the tire width to like a 275 which would be mounted on a 9in rim. Then your car would have a larger "contact patch" and teh car would handle better in theory. I have 275s in the front and 315s in teh rear and boy it sure sticks better to the road!

what do you mean by performance?
for drag, the 18s or 19s will most likely be heavier than the 16s and possibly hurt performace.

An increase in torque or horsepower anything to increase my cars speed.

You know any good places on the web where I can get good 275 rims?

Nope you wont get any extra HP or torque form putting wheels on your car. Need to do engine mods, trans mods or rear mods to get your car to hustle down the street a little faster

rims come in sizes like 17x9. 17 is the diameter of teh rim, 9 is the width of the rim. you would run a 275/40/17 tire on that rim. a good place to find tires and look at some wheels would be www.tirerack.com

I have 275's on 17's. It handles a lot better. I can take corners like you wouldn't believe lol. Only thing I don't like is how they track on the road at speeds higher then 50. Get's kind of scary on highway speeds. I think I might drop down to 245's.

Let's see here.....it depends on what your priorities are because you're going to gain in some areas and lose in others.....

Let's say you get 18x8 or 19x8 wheels with stock backspacing and stock height/section width tires.....don't have my calculator handy but you're probably looking at something like 245/40R18 or 245/35R19. You will end up with better handling and braking due to less sidewall flex of the lower profile tires. The trade-offs are: harsher ride, more potential of tire/wheel damage due to potholes/"curb rash", less straight-line traction, etc. Also, depending on the wheels you get, bigger wheels are normally heavier - the lighter ones will likely run you more $$$$. Heavier wheels mean more unsprung weight, which means slower acceleration and an even harsher ride.

It doesn't stop there though.....most people opt to go with a wider tire/wheel combination than stock, and this adds even more factors into the equation. The benefits of a wider tires: better handling/braking and better straight-line traction due to greater tire contact patch. The drawbacks are: greater rolling resistance/aerodynamic drag causing slower acceleration and reduced fuel economy. Also, if you drive in the rain, a wider tire is more prone to hydroplaning.

Well, that should about cover it; please tell me if I left anything out. It ceases to amaze me how many people fail to consider these factors when buying tires/wheels. Most people just go out and buy the stuff that looks the best and say hell with the rest. Again, it depends what you want. To each their own.....

onebadponcho,

Very well said !

Also, some people would be surprised how light some of the 18's are.

thxs

Thxs for your help. I found these rims that I like and they have 245/40/18 dimensions. I think these will look good on my camaro. I wanted something different then having the spokes like everyone else has.

what everyone said is about sufficient for the question.

a bigger, wider wheel will actually rob you of some (2-3hp) power since it takes more power to turn them.

as for the wheels you posted please don't

i think they would look hideous! but to each his own

Check ebay... and check people's sigs for what rims they went with....

you coudldo much better if you are going to dump $1500 on rims

bigger tires will make you slower but handle better on average...
