Paintjob "quality" and cost ratio
Hey bud, i have been painting cars for quite awhile now!, you can get a good paint job that will last you awhile for 1500 bucks it all depends on where you live. I live in nebraska and a 2000 dollar paint job is equivilant to a 5000 dollar paint job in california that is just how it is. any painter should be able to lay down the paint with not much if any detail work needing to be done to it. as long as you have the shop stick to same brand products your paint will last for you, like if you want dupont then use dupont, or PPG stick with PPG, dont use transtar primer, dupont base coat, and PPG clear. and about color fade, any color will fade with time i have yet to see a color not fade. I dont know if any of this makes sence to you but you can get a good paint job for the money you are willing to spend...

I live in NJ....the sun isn't that bad, and when I do paint the car I will be covering it when it's not being driven.
Thanks for the reassurances birdie and chisel, that's pretty much what I figured.

I went to maaco for my paintjob, and it cost me $600... the car was done very well... I have many pics of it in my sig if you want to check it out... but if you have more to spend, I would take it somewhere else... I just got my paintjob done there because I really needed to get a paintjob since the car was sunfaded pretty bad and I had just got a new hood & spoiler. I didnt have a good job at the time so I could only spend so much... but its only temporary, but has held up suprisingly well so far. and came with a warenttee
- there was no excessive orange peel.. it looks pretty smooth on the finish...
- there was absolutly no overspray on anything...
-my car is black so I guess it would be hard to mismatch the paint so I cant say anything about that...
-as for fisheyes... the only place that I got them was on the hood... and there is only about 3 and you cant notice them.
-as far as I can tell there is no dirt in the paint...
-no runs
-no waves
-the paint hasnt chipped yet... I took it camping with me last month and I hit a monster pot hole which put a long dent under the door on the rocker panel and the paint stayed intact.(Im hoping when I get my ground effects it will cover it up.
-I got the car painted about a year ago and it still retains a new paintjob wet look...
-my major complaint was with my front bumper... they didnt get the spiderwebbing out, but they warned me about it before hand... but they did get it off the back bumper.

I've seen that most people don't know what a good paint job should look like. If it's shiny they say it looks good but a cheap paint job will have:
-excessive orange peel
-over spray
-mismatched paint
-fisheyes
-dirt in the paint
-runs
-waves
-the paint will chip off in big pieces from stones
-won't hold up to normal wear
-etc.
You have to look at all angles, close, far, sunlight, artificial light, etc. to evaluate a paint job.
Ask around at car shows and find out where they got their cars painted.
I'd say for a decent paint job you'd have to pay about $3000. I'm not sure but that seems about right for an average paint job.
Dealerships and collision centers are generally not good places to go either because they are interested in quantity not quality.

i have a black car, black everything. the paint has tons of scratches and the front has bug marks and the passenger door is in horrible condition because of a previous wreck, and the repair of the fiberglass and the repaint was horrible.
if i was to get my car re-painted black, how much might that cost? i'd assume they wouldn't have to remove the body panels, considering the whole car is black already and the doorjams, etc etc don't need to be color matched. i want a good paint job that'll shine for awhile.
also, how much would it cost to fix the fiberglass on the passenger door? its got a crack that was patched. the crack hasn't re-opened but it has made its presence known by cracking the paint.

anasazi, if you shop aroung and look for shops to repaint your car you can probably find a good price, anywhere probably from 600 and up. It dont really matter how many scratches are in the paint because it needs to be sanded anyway, they may charge more if the scratches are deep it just depends.
As for the door. The previous repair may be falling apart becuase our doors are made of SMC ( Sheet molded compound) not fiberglass. although they look the same they are not made with the same material and if you repair it with fiberglass it wont last. So depending on how bad the damage is it may take 3 hours or so to fix, so whatever the rate for labor is where you live per hour, it is 40 bucks an hour in nebraska, it would cost 120 to repair the door. 3 x 40= 120. maybe that will help..

I should also add that color will play a big part in how much it costs. The paint alone to paint my car was over $1,500 just for the YELLOW paint. The clear, sand paper, tape, all that stuff was more. There is over $2,000 in product/materials in the paint job. So, even if they did a crappy job and rushed it and didn't take their time, it still wouldn't be cheap to have a car painted a tint based yellow like I did.
The Millennium Yellow is an expensive paint and I just thought I'd bring up that color needs to be considered too when you think about how much it's gonna cost ya!

yeah that is exactly right!! color makes a big difference, black and white are normally cheap, Yellow can get pretty spendy cause some of it dont cover to well and takes a hell of a lot of coats just to get things covered.

uhhh, leaving something out? It just so happens to be the most important aspect of a great looking paintjob and a great looking car.Its commonly called blocking! Body prep and quality of the paint and the person holding the gun make all the difference.
Body prep is about 50%
Paint is about 25%
Painter the other 25%
If your gonna buy the paint, make sure the paint shop you intend to use can fluently spray the paint. Some people simply can't make all brands of paint do right.
Dont worry about why their soo cheap either. Just try to find some of their cars and see how flat the paint is, see if its fading, or falling off ect....
Stay away from places that do a lot of used car dealer jobs. They tend to use standard primer and are bad to buff a car the morning after itwas painted. They have really low dollar primers and clears too! It usually starts to chip away after a couple of years. Thats all I can think of right now. Hope this helps.
