Re: paint job

Same color... $350 to $10,000+

Change the color $450 to $10,000+

Seriously though, prices will actually vary by about that much.

Getting a paint job is much like buying a computer. It is better to see how much you have to spend and then decide what kind of paint job (or computing power) you can get. If you can't get the paint job of your liking with the money you have then you save a little while longer.

The guy I use for my work charges $2,000 to $3000 for a repaint on a Camaro with no or minimal body work in the same color. To change the color you are looking at $3000 to $4000 on average. My millennium yellow SS was $5000 but that was because of the type of paint (tint based) and it took 7-9 coats to cover. Material cost on mine was over $2000 so the price goes up.

A buddy of mine had a Maaco job done on his car for their half price special. I think it cost him $350 and they changed the color. Believe it or not, but it did look pretty good. I would have guessed that it would have been closer to like a $1500 to $2000 paint job and when he told me $350 I was like

Your best bet is to go around to some different body shops and ask to see some of their completed work. Ask your buds and co-workers as well to see who they would recommend. Check out these recommendations and go from there. Eventually you'll find a place that will do good work and be within your budget. BUT, shopping for a paint job is nearly as important as shopping for car insurance in that prices will vary greatly... even for similar quality work (or coverage in my insurance comparison ) so it is important to look around a bit and get some prices from the ones who you like their work.

Re: paint job

A good same-color paintjob with no bodywork should run about $2000-$3000.

Re: paint job

im a body man, listen to me! lol those web cracks? are a BITCH to fix... if you want it done right.... its not good to sand em down all the way, because it weakens the plastic, and can actually warp it with heat just from the D/A... trust me, ive made that mistake once... not to mention, who wants to add bondo to an unsanded plastic part? it will just fall out.... heres what you do...

lightly sand it, to get it etched, and to remove the high spots

using a squeegee (plastic spreader) spread an even layer of glazing and spot putty (being sure to use multiple thin layers and not one thick layer) over the surface

wait till it dries and go at it with some 400 grit, then a wet sand with some 800+ grit

thats the best way to take care of the spider webs.

as for me? i would NEVER take a car to maaco.... they do the absolute ****TIEST job of prepping a car for paint, i have a connection with a guy in town at an Earl Schieb paint shop... but i can bring him whatever supplies i want used, and he will shoot it for $500....... even if you wanted to use their paint, its MUCH better quality than maaco... they do their prepwork much better, and they dont try to bullsh*t you with "paint checking" and having to sand the car to bare metal.... maaco does.... if you want an economy paint job, go to Earl Schieb.... if you want a nice paint job, i hate to bust your bubble brent, but you can pay anywhere from $1000..... up to $35,000 and MORE depending on what you want... body work is key, and that can rack up to $10k in itself...if you want it to be totally spotless...... then lets talk kandy paint with a 3 stage layout...... if you pay anything less than 6 grand to have the car kandy painted, you aint got real kandy! just think of what you want, and what its gonna cost you... its a daily driver im assuming, so you dont wanna put a 10 thousand dollar paint job on it cuz if you get a rock chip your gonna shoot yourself... so make it under 4 grand... and under 1 grand if you wanna not give a damn..... i know with my connection, i can paint my car, and get it repainted any time i want, color change or not for just $100 more lol.... look around, deals are out there

Actually, I think it has more to do with the pride the actual worker takes in their work. I'm sure there are good and bad shops for both Maaco and Earl. Around here, a buddy of mine uses Maaco and gets some pretty impressive results for the price. He does make sure the car is prepped properly though. I just think it depends just as much on the person doing the work as you think it does WHO (Maaco/Earl) Around here, the Earl Schieb jobs I've seen have been deplorable... saw one where they painted over a vinyl pinstripe. So, I think it probably depends most on who manages the store and who does the paint/prep than it does the name of Earl or Maaco. Just my opinion

Yeah, yeah, I know that... that is why I put the "+" symbol after my $10,000 I just wanted to put something there that was at least slightly reasonable. LOL!

Speaking of finding paint deals... I was going to try painting my front bumper cover "just because". I had never done it before but figured if I did a real sucky job and it looked like crap, I'd just have a pro do it However, while at the paint store getting the materials to do the job, I ran into a guy who said he'd repaint my front bumper cover on my 96SS for $65. Rest of the story here and pics if you want to see. Looked GREAT too and I'm very picky.

Before and after pics are located above and you won't believe the difference. Also, please don't email me asking where to get in contact with that guy because I don't know where he is anymore... he moved
