Opinion on 4 point harness restraints

I am getting racing seats (for comfort and looks) and I came to the conclusion that a harness would be much cheaper than finding a set of black seatbelts for my car. A set of our seatbelts are around $75+ when a harness is around $25+ on ebay. The problem is I drive a V6. It is not fast. Will it look rediculous or does it not matter? They certainly will be safer since its a third gen with no airbags. Any comments would be appreciated.

How do you plan to attach the shoulder straps to the chassis? What are the strap widths? Are the belts DOT approved for "street" use (not even the best Simpson 5-point harnesses are)? Do they have any sort of SFI-rating that would indicate that they are safe for competition use? Why do you feel they are safer than your stock 3rd Gen 3-pt harness?

I'd be hesitant to trust my safety to a $25 harness. JMHO

I think 4 tight straps will be safer than just the stock 2 over my shoulder and lap.

I am checking to make sure that the straps are street legal and safe.

Also, it appears that the straps attach to the seat itself. Is that right?

Your current setup is "3-point".... 1 - left lap strap, 2- right lap strap, 3- shoulder belt. The shoulder belt is soundly anchored into the structure of the car. You are adding one should belt... = 4th point.

No. You need to anchor the shoulder straps into the structure of the car. Attached to the seat, in a hard impact the seat will bend forward (or rip out of the floor) and smash you into the steering column. Ideally, the shoulder straps are attached to a cross-bar on a roll cage or roll bar, not more than 4" below the shoulder height of the driver, to avoid axcessive compression loads on the spine. Alternatively, you can anchor them to the floor of the car, but the angle of the strap from the floor should not exceed 45-degrees, which puts the anchors somewhere in the middle of your rear seat.

I meant to say 3 strap. I will probably get the stock seatbelts then. Sounds like these will be hard to install. Thanks.
