New buffer for christmas

Hey,
I got this new 11 in craftsmen orbital buffer for Christmas. This thing looks pretty sweet, only I don't know anything about buffers. I have never used one before.I do think maybe I should start with something smaller. What doe ya'll think? what kind does everyone use? Where can I learn how to use the damn thing? Any detailing/buffing websites? Thanks

Bad Andy

I haven't used mine on the SS. I've used it numerous times on the other cars though. Just make sure not to get any sand or debris on the pad. I was always told that buffers would ruin paint with swirls or burn through the paint. But I've had very good results with mine and found it pretty hard to mess up. It's just a pain trying to get too close to trim pieces and body contours. You still have to hit those by hand.

I usually use it for rubbing compound or wax application. But on the SS I use Klasse pollish system. Pretty much like Zaino. I do it by hand. It's easy to apply with a pad and remove with a microfiber towel.

An orbital buffer won't damage the paint at all. You can hold it on one spot and let it run and it won't do any damage or leave swirls. An orbital is less aggressive and safer but you won't get the same results as from a rotary.

A rotary buffer is the type that will burn paint if not used correctly because it can heat up the paint.

It also depends on how hard you hold it to the paint and how much "cut" the wax or polishing compound has. I would test the whole thing out on a not so noticable area on another car before you try it out on your Camaro. Better to be safe than sorry.

11 Inch will definitely make the Hood, Top, Doors, and other larger areas easy, but to be safe, I wouldn't try getting into the smaller areas with it...(e.g. under the spoiler, right under the mirrors...) because you will run a higher risk of bumping the side of it into something and scratching/denting something

There's not much to it though...just use it as if it were your hand and an applicator pad doing the work (or in other words...just use use it as you would normally wax your car.)

The Show and Shine section might have more info for you...
