Post What kind of orbital buffers do you guys use?

Ok guys i have a craftsman orbital buffer, but i think it may be to fast. I am worried that i will burn the paint off. I am going to be using a 3M swirl mark remover with it. What is the fastest buffer i should use? (i'm mean what RPM)? Also if i use a buffer should i use a more abrasive compund first the the 3m swirl mark remover or clay bar and the 3M?
thanks
Tom

Ok, several things here are kinda messed up here. First clay bars only remove contamination ABOVE the paint surface, they do nothing for scratches and swirls which are BELOW the paint surface.

Also, orbital buffers are not rotary buffers, orbital buffers buff in an orbit pattern (oval) not round and round like a rotary so you can not compare RPM in terms of an orbital buffer.

You will never hurt your paint with a Crafstman orbital (unless you buff with dirt or foreign materials on your buffer pad)

Always try the mild polish first, this means try the 3M Swirl Mark Remover part number 39009 first before trying something more aggressive.

I would use a foam bonnet on the Crafstman and you should be fine. I have a 10 inch WEN buffer which says something about 3,000 on the box but that is like 3,000 back and forth motions (the whole bonnett only moves like a couple centimeters) not round and round.

To test this put a mark with a sharpie on the edge of the bonnett and you will see that the bonnett hardly goes round and round at all.

Sorry Kevin I don't have a orbital buffer. I do have a rotary buffer. I just don't want to burn the paint off of my car, especially on the corners because i know that the paint is thinner. so how many RPM's can i go up to with a rotary buffer?
thanks

I don't ever use a rotary now so I can not tell you, 3M might have specs on that type of thing on their web site. Rotary is a great way to FU your paint. I would if I where you get a 8 to 10 inch orbital.

I can't believe i forgot that i had an orbital buffer, but it is one of those cheap ones from autozone? is that ok to use? Also it has the cheap pads that just have the elastic to hold them on, is that ok?

OK before i ask these question i apologize because i am lost and keep asking the same questions?

My car needs ALOT of work to get the paint to look good.

should i clay bar then use 3M swirl mark reomover? then polish and wax.

or use perfect it-II and then 3M swirl mark? then polish an wax

also what polish should i use?

Also when you recommend the products for me to use can you recommend what pads i should use on the buffer?

thanks for all you help and i apologize again.

That is where mine came from, you don't have to have a 200 dollar buffer, everything does not have to be expensive to work good, Zaino is 13 dollars a bottle some waxes are 60 to 100 dollars a bottle that can't hold a candle to Zaino, it is not all in the money.

is that ok to use?

Yes

Also it has the cheap pads that just have the elastic to hold them on, is that ok?

As long as it is the foam kind, foam is what the 3M Swirl Mark Remover is made to be used with.

should i clay bar then use 3M swirl mark reomover?

Yes

then polish and wax.

If that is what you got, yes but the 3M is the polish step.

or use perfect it-II and then 3M swirl mark? then polish an wax

Try the 3M swirl first, it may be all you need.

also what polish should i use?

www.zainobros.com (you had to ask)

Also when you recommend the products for me to use can you recommend what pads i should use on the buffer?

Foam as said above

thanks for all you help and i apologize again.
