To mod or not to mod

Hello! I have an 89 iroc z28 and I cant not decide what to do with it! It desperatly needs paint... and I was planning to get a new hood, change the ground fx and get a highrise spoiler (like the 92 but with the middle light).. but now I am under the impression that having a car with all matching number is a cool thing.. I'd hate to junk my old hood if that is the case.. but I still intend on getting the spoiler/wing thing and possibly the gfx.. somthing more like the 92 possibly.. there don't seem to be many options.

Any thoughts on the whole numbers thing?

Other than a small ding and paint.. my current hood is solid

Your hood and GFX have no numbers on them. Matching numbers refers to the drivetrain.

Unless that car has like 25 miles on it, do what you want with it IMO. Make it your own car and if you want to mod it, mod it!

I completely "trashed" a 1996SS which is a limited production car. It's all "screwed up" as far as being original. But, guess what, I don't care because I'm not going to keep it in a garage with no miles for 30 years to make it worth the same as what I paid for it just because it is "original". I'm enjoying it NOW

Agreed! Have you actually had people tell you that you "trashed" it by modding it?

Re: To mod or not to mod

Not those exact words But, people have expressed "unbelief" that I'd mod a limited production numbered car. Sigh.

Even a limited production SS would take probably 25 years for it to be worth anything and then how much would it be worth? What I bought it for??? Cars are not a good investment so I don't worry about stuff like that

Yeah, I hear you. Might as well do what you want with it and make it so you're happy with it.

Re: To mod or not to mod

To me, most mods are sins, because they make the car look worse. However, if you mod your car like GT KILLER (just as an example), it should end up cool. I like ALL of his mods, and he never "trashes" the car by putting a ridiculous 3 inch cowl induction hood on it or a Supra spoiler or any of that crap. Nearly all of his mods to his Camaro look like they should have come on the car in the first place (like the silver Z28 logos and stuff).

I'm pretty much a purist, and only like tasteful mods, so I definitely wouldn't snub my nose at your car as long as it looked cool.

I don't want to spend a lot of time looking for a pic, but here's an example. I know you said you had a 3rd gen, but if you did something like... put this ridiculous hood on a 4th gen... and you didn't have some giant Lingenfelter supercharger or something that made it necessary to have such an ugly hood... yeah... I'd barf.

But I don't mind radical mods either. I have this online friend with the Callaway C8 bodykit and I absolutely love it. That's a major mod, and in my opinion, it looks AMAZING!

Wow, thanks for all the compliments man, much appreciated.

IMO, there's a fine line there......you can do some things that will make it look just right, but if you go too far and do as few as one or two additional things....you can very easily make it look ridiculous.

Re: To mod or not to mod

The way I see it, if you're going to do it, do it right and stand out from the crowd. I've done a lot to the appearance of my Camaro. For me, the best feeling in the world is when you're randomly driving your car around town and someone comes up and says they recognize your car from such-and-such.com... when your car is visually different enough that people can recognize it and remember it, that's the payoff for me. The subtle mods are nice for the people that actually notice them (you, yourself, and a handful of fbody owners with a good eye) but if an average joe doesn't notice the mod, IMO was it really worth it? If you're showing your car, the only mods the general people are going to notice are the real mods, rims, hood, spoiler, etc. But on the same token, if you slap on an SS spoiler or an SS hood, they'll just think "hey nice ss" and move on to the next car and not think twice about it. I don't know, maybe the mentality changes with region and population density, maybe not. Here in suburban Detroit area, for every mile you drive around, you'll see ATLEAST one fbody per mile, so when you see the same "off-the-lot" fbodies over and over again, yeah fbodies look sexy and sweet, but after awhile it gets boring. That's my two cents, atleast.

Here there aren't really a lot of F-bodies, or at least not a lot of nice F-bodies, (like show-car worthy) so I think a car like mine does stand out. I've gotten loads of compliments at gas stations and in parking lots and whatnot. And, I don't mean to toot my own horn here, but I think I have one of the nicest-looking ones in this surrounding area, besides the one or two that I've come across with a huge cam and loud-*** exhaust. I'm just not one to go all-out on a car, I like the subtlety of just a few things, basically that when you look at the car, you say "that's definitely not stock" but yet you don't automatically think "aw sh*t, that guy put like $2000 into appearance mods". Dunno if that makes sense, but....

I know exactly what you're saying. And like you said, there's not a lot of fbodies in your area, so for your area, what you've done DOES stand out from the crowd, so it works. Around here, is a different story though. Doesn't mean it's any less of a car or not a nice looking car, though, not by any means. I wish they could do a count of all the cars that people own around here and see just how many Fbodies there really are. I swear, there's gotta be atleast 10 per 1 square mile. The condo association I live in, it's two streets with three courts that branch off from it, I'd say about 50 detached condos in the association, doesn't even take up a half of a square mile, and there's three of us with fbodies.

Now, if I had a Mustang, then it'd be a different story. Mustangs of all kinds (tons of V6's) are rampant around here. I'll pass probably 7 or 8 of them on my way home from school (it's less than a 15 minute ride).
