Meissen's Project CarPC Thread
As promised, the major part of it is finished: it's been test fitted and mounted. Now I just need the power supply to come so I can actually wire it up, but here's pictures of it installed. I'll come back and post pictures of it on when the power supply comes and I have that wired (that should only take an hour to do).

Things to comment on before someone else does, I need a new knee bolster, so don't comment on the horrid edge of the knee bolster. That was the result of the previous, 10.5" touchscreen bezel. This one's mostly based off the stock radio bezel, the 10.5" was totally custom. Oh, and yes, I know I need to hide the wires under it.
PS - If you're going to troll or flame, don't comment at all. Thanks.

Re: Meissen's Project CarPC Thread
looks really good. your interior is awesome even though i never liked carbon fiber, it looks really good in the camaro. I hope to start my own projects like that once i get the time (energy) and money.

Re: Meissen's Project CarPC Thread
I'm probably going to have some red carpet, planning on changing the interior to have a transition from red on bottom, carbon fiber in the "middle" level, and then black interior panels above the carbon fiber.
But thanks for the compliments

Re: Meissen's Project CarPC Thread
That in a word is awesometastic.
Can't wait to see some pics of it in action! Is it going to be mainly a stereo replacement or will it actually control some aspect of your car?

Re: Meissen's Project CarPC Thread
that is nice, and how did you manage to make that, im considering a fiberglass project and backseat removal (something smoother flowing than the boxes) but i dunno how to frame it out =/ anyway it looks good.
Re: Meissen's Project CarPC Thread
Well, currently it's only capable of playing my entire mp3 collection (to me, that in itself is a huge plus -- no more skipping CDs!) wireless internet access (will be used to "dock" the car into my home network to transfer mp3s and files from my desktop to the carPC), and GPS navigation. The best part about it, is that it truely is a computer. Hence, if I want to expand to DVD-rom (which I plan to do at some point) it's just a matter of plugging it in and finding a spot for it. I wanted DVD-rom from the start, but unfortunately I would need a slot-load slimline DVD-rom, so I'll worry about that later. If I had a v8, I could run diagnostic software on it. Unfortunately, I have a v6 and it's also a 94, so it's OBD-I and not OBD-II, software for an OBD-I 3.4L v6 is all but impossible to find, or the ones I do find are ungodly prices. Some people have gone so far as to actually tie the computer in with their HVAC system, creating touchscreen programs to control HVAC functions, I don't think I'm going to go that far with this lol.
As for making it, in this case it really wasn't that hard because I used the stock radio bezel as the base. I first cut out 4 inches from the bottom of the bezel so that the screen could sit flush with the edge of the radio opening at the top. Once I had the screen all bolted and mounted in place, the weight of the screen was actually causing the bottom of the bezel to sag, so I used JB Weld to glue the top of the screen to the top of the bezel, and then used it on the bottom to really get it all glued in and secure. Once that was all done, then I just used Bondo-Glass to fill in and make it more smooth flowing. I have a lot more fiberglass work ahead of me, as I plan to create a custom enclosure where my backseat used to be to hold three 12s, amp, and fire extinguisher. When I start that project, I'll make sure to post pictures.
Normally what I've done when I'm doing something totally custom is I create a frame with strips of wood normally used for model airplanes, it's like a stronger balsa wood. Once I have a frame and all that, I take old 100% cotton t-shirts and then pin them onto the wood to create a "cover" for the piece I want to fiberglass. Once there's a material laid over the frame, then you can resin that and it will get decently hard, a couple layers of fiberglass and you have yourself a good structure. I'm a huge amateur at this though, so I'm sure theres better ways to do it.

Re: Meissen's Project CarPC Thread
I actually found out that the biggest problem with my sound is that the computer's sound setting was almost at mute, so I had to blast the sound to get it to come out, and hence it would REALLY blast the static. Once I turned the volume on the computer all the way up, then there was barely any static in the sound, I had it blasting at 20+ volume (10 is the level its at when you can hear it but there's no bass for reference, 25 is the highest I've ever pushed it) and it was sounding pretty dang good, just a little static. In any case, I have a bunch of media files now lol. Unfortunately these are HUGE.

These are some high res ones.

And here are some movies. The first two are of me turning with the GPS on, you can see it update as I turn. Works pretty good. The last movie, a whole 40mb, shows me using the interface going through some of the features.
