Louvers or Cowl?

I just turned 16 and I have a 86 z which is in the restoration process. Its missing one of the hood louvers and the others in bad conditions so I have a dilema. The car may be getting repainted soon so should I spend the $130 for new hood louvers or buy a aftermarket hood such as a 3 inch cowl. Keep in mind that this is a third gen and what would look good on one but I cant decide.

Seems like a no brainer to me, I would get the cowl without question. JMO

Ya but a hood will cost me $500 give or take which is alot of money in my opinion for something that has no performance value. If I do go for a aftermarker hood which ones looks the best for the money in your opinions?

Re: Louvers or Cowl?

that cowl hood will probably weigh a 1/3 of what the stocker does. id go with the cowl for that reason alone.

I hate cowl hoods. Looks like a pizza box is sitting on the stock hood

most glass hoods weight about 20-35 pounds, that stock hood probably weighs 75-100, plus your engine runs much cooler, and a cowl hood just looks so much better than any factory hood does.

So cowl hood or should I go a different route? Which would be my best yet cheapest choice?

Re: Louvers or Cowl?

If you get in a wreck (especially with an SUV) your engine is as good as destroyed if you have a fiberglass hood. That's one of the main reasons your stock hood is made of steel.

Re: Louvers or Cowl?

well there are a few differ one to choose from there is vfn which is vfnfiberglass.com, there is glastec glastec.com and ascd ( amer sport car design ) i really like the ascd so im getting a 2 inch ascd cowl for my 96z but look around and see which one u like
also yeah fiberglass will be weaker than your stock hood in the case of a crash but it also gives weight deduction.....still its your car and up to u
