List of stuff needed to paint dash in my truck

I want to paint the dash bezel on my truck. I want to do silver (exterior color) even though it won't be the same exact color, I'm sure I can get close.

Anyway, the dash isnt very textured, but it does have some "grit" to it. Should I sand it first, and if so, should I get it completely smooth before primer/painting it? What grits should I use? Dry or wet sand? Do I need to use primer? If so, what do you recommend?

Also, I assume I should use a bunch of light coats, instead of a few heavy ones? Should I sand between coats? and if so, what grit should I use?

I want to clear this also, so it looks like the exterior, nice and shiny, should I clear 1 time, or a bunch of light coats also?

Sorry for making this so long, but I want it to look good!

Check my post below on painting your interiors...that should help some. If not, drop me an email and I'll be happy to help out as best I can. Good luck.

Thanks a lot! I searched but guess I should have looked at the first 10 posts on the forum first.

1 question, you say to use 600 and 800 grit sandpaper.....did you sand it dry or wet?

No problem

I sanded it dry. It takes some patience and if you have it, then you'll be very happy with your results. Good luck

got it all sanded perfectly smooth.....hung it with wire up in the garage and started spraying. I'm on the third light coat now, but have a little problem....there is a spot, where the paint looks like it is bubbled a little, and dripped, I think i hit it directly with the spray can instead of starting to the side of the piece and then comming over it.... if that makes sense....what should I do? I'm thinking wait for it to dry and then wet sand it with the 800, but I'm open to advise....I want to get this done today.

I would sand that 'drip' off. I would have taken it off right away, but if you let it dry then I would carefully remove that drip and repaint probably adding a couple more coats than usual to even everything out. It all depends on large the 'drip' is. Good luck

I guess I'll give it a good hour or two to dry completely, and then sand it off.
