Ideas for custom hood strut

I have a 100% fiberglass hood, very light. The factory hood struts were way too stiff and the SS one from SLP still didn't do the job. I use a vaccum cleaner extension to prop my hood up which is embarrassing, especially at car shows. I'll keep using the vaccum extension for when i work on the car at home, but i want to fabricate something fancy to prop it up at car shows/mettings, maybe something like a short chrome rod, not too sure i need some ideas!

Best place to find something I would think would be a junkyard. So many cars had a prop rod to hold the hood up. you should be able to find something to work or, be able to make work. might just find parts to work from

go to the parts store and ask to look at the catalog for the hood struts, some times its already out front in the help section or whatever. and find a strut with less pressure and is the same length. might take some digging but you should be able to find something.

that or send your new ones to me and i'll send you my worn out set

I had a fiberglass hood like that on my old 89 camaro. Even with very soft hood struts couldn't keep it from bending the fiberglass. I got a prop at a junkyard for nothing but my $1 entrance fee and cleaned it up. Looked great.

I would go with the prop over the struts. I even tried some that a friend had laying around that wouldn't hold his hood up anymore, they wouldn't hold mine either lol. There was no middle ground for me, either too soft or too much even at the softest.

Yeah looks like i'm going that route, get a cheap prop, clean it out, paint it and make it look decent. Maybe i could even get some of that carbon fiber tape and just wrap it in that.

Just paint it black. That'll look better than ghetto carbon fiber tape.

There was a thread a year or two ago about a guy that drilled a hole in his stock ones to release the gas inside. He then made pins for the holes that were connected to a chain and then to the hood. He then polished all of it. Looked very nice.

EDIT: Nevermind, i thought you said it also had hood pins.

It doesn't look too bad, i'll probably give it a shot in the near future.
