I want to flat black my car! Anyone have some help?
I want to flat black my car! Anyone have some help?
Hey guys,
As of right now, my car currently sits in 4 different colors of paint. It has the factory red, and then my left fender and front bumper cover are forest green and the paint is spiderwebbed, and not to mention my hood is patriot red along with black in all the factory locations like door handles, headlight and foglight areas, and antenea. So I want to change that ASAP, well atleast before she's back on the road again, which should be before June 1st. That's my goal. But I'm low on funding since that's going in the engine and suspension. Anyways, I was thinking about just going ahead and painting it flat black and then have a good friend pinstripe it for me since he came up with the idea. He's really good and I trust he'll do good work on the pinstriping but I don't know if my car would look good flat black with pinstripes. What do you guys think? Would you do it if you needed a paint job BAD and this was a cheap solution? Btw, I am planning on painting the car SOM with white pearl hockey stripes eventually. But for now, it needs something else. I have chrome Z/28 badging for the fenders and rear deck. And also chrome LT1 badging for the little triangles and a chrome camaro rear fillin that I will be putting on my car. Once I make up my mind on which wheels I want to get I will put those on the car before she's ready for the streets, and of course they are gonna be atleast 17's with only chrome.
So what do you guys think? Would you do it? And if so how, if you care to explain that far.

Sorta like this???

Its a product made by Alsa. You put it over your base coat and it gives it a matte/ leather type finish. I've been wanting to give it a shot on some interior stuff.
stuff looks awesome. heres some more...

Yes, exactly like that helmet, just not with so much going on. After seeing it done that way, I may even throw in some red pinstripping too. If it looks like primer when I get done, I'll hate it. In fact, I would just leave it in the garage until I could afford to redo it. But right now, I'm an apprentice at a local body shop and I've seen flat black look good, it's all in the prep and detail that you put into it. Plus actually using the proper tools goes a long way to getting the proper look. Spray paint doesn't belong on any car.

If you do it in flat black, I would NOT put any pinstripes on it. If you paint pinstripes on it, it's gonna look like a guy who got halfway started on doing a paintjob and ran out of money to complete it so he just put pinstripes on it to make it "presentable." The sad part about this is that you could prep the crap out of it and lay down a flawless paintjob and to the average lay person it's still just gonna look like a primered car.
Just curious, but how much more expensive would it be to just lay on some SOM?

Re: I want to flat black my car! Anyone have some help?
About $1,000 to $2,000 just for the materials, plus labor. A local bodyshop qouted me $7,000 to paint it back to the factory red, and that wasn't including door jams and engine bay, which my car needs atleast the engine bay painted if I decided to stay with the factory red. If I was changing the color to SOM, obvisously, the door jams would need sprayed to. It all adds up fast, when you want it done right.
And btw, I don't care what the "average" person thinks about my car. If they can't take the time to pay attention to the details, they don't have any reason to justify thier opinion.

i've always liked flat black cars for some reason. A friend of mine painted his chevelle 'satin' black... which didn't look so much like primer. it was more of a "just not obnoxiously glossy" black. he used rattlecan paint too...
it looked something like this:

I'd say go for it... at least the car will be one color... and save you money for the paint scheme you REALLY want...
