I new and I bought a Camaro. Need help.
I am new and I bought a Camaro. Need help.
Well I am new to the Camaro world. I just bought my first Camaro yesterday. Its an '84 t-top. I bought it with no motor or trans. It came from the factory with a v6 and a 5 speed. It is going to be my next project. I plan on dropping in a 350 and a 4 speed muncie. I would like to put on a differnt style front bumper, like the IROC's had, and take the slotted one off. Will that style fit and what about the Z-28 body kits? I will most likely have many more questions to come. Thanks.
Also, do you think that $500 for a rolling chassis with no body damage and a good interior is a good deal. I will try and get some pics on here later.

Z28 Bumpers, ground effects, ect. will all fit, no problem. And $500 for a roller in the condition stated isn't too bad. I got my 81 Firebird (No motor/ tranny, T-Tops, good interior, straight body) for $150. But that was off a friend.

for $500 i would say it's a good buy.
why the 4speed? hook it up to a t56 six speed. 450hp factory rated capacity and 2 overdrive gears!!
anyway...as stated...bumper will fit fine.
watch ebay i guess, or see if you can find a junker, it's not like plastic rusts. and maybe you can pick up a z28 or iroc and swap out the rear end. since your v6 rear will be an open differential.
some of the irocs even came with factory 4 wheel disc brakes.

I am going with a 4 speed because my neighbor raced all kinds of cars, from monster trucks to modifieds, and he can get a muncie 4 speed very cheap. This weekend I am giong to a swap meet and will be looking for an IROC rear end with disc. Also, my neighbor used to sell parts and still has all his connections with all the aftermarket companies.(edlebrock,Holly, Hooker, Comp Cams etc...) So I cant wait to start on the motor.
Thanks for the help by the way.

You can buy or do a 383 for the same money as a 350.
You may get the 4 speed cheap but your going to have to buy or mod. the hole in the floor, the bell housing, the cross member, the drive shaft, and the torque arm.
And more important, I think you'll enjoy a 5 or 6 speed much more. The 6 speed gives you the option of going with a higher rear end gear for performance and still get good gas mileage. Over time the saving in gas will pay for the difference between the two.
You may want to consider a better rear end from the start. That way you wont have to change it later when it breaks.
But we're probably getting ahead of ourselves here. First off you need to decide what you want to do with this car and how long you think your going to keep it.
If you are just using it to go back and forth to work or school a V6 and 5 speed wiil do that just find and save you money. Also if your not going to keep this car for five or 10 years, i.e. you think you might want to up grade to a 4th gen. in a couple of years, you may not want to put a lot of money into it.
However you did say "project car" so I assume you intend it for show or perfomance. If you are going to do any kind of organized racing you will be resticted by the rules of the organization.
In any case, nice choice. Companies like Year One and OPG make most of the replacement parts for these, should you need any.

BTW, a good place to get bumpers and stuff is www.auto-bodyparts.com They have very reasonable prices.
Re: I new and I bought a Camaro. Need help.
This car will not be my daily driver at all. I have an '04 Z71 for that. I just want a project and a cool car to drive when I want. It will not see the track but maybe a few small local shows and cruises. After reading what ever one has wrote I will steer clear of the 4 speed, I did not know there would be so much modification involved. I will most likely get a 5 speed and beef up the Iroc rear end to handle the power.
I guess I will keep this one for a few years after it is complete and then sell it and find another project. This is my first Camaro and it will be a learning experence.
