So if you drive too far, the engine compartment will just explode because too much air is getting forced in, and can't escape?

No, more like it shoots air into the engine compartment, swirls around and goes out the bottom, passing the engine, cooling it down quite a bit.

I thought that the airdam underneath the car shoots air up into the engine. The extra air may hit that air and just swirl around until if finds a place out. Thats just my theory, I know nothing about heat extractors or ram air.

it probable does help. but what i was trying to explain was his hood vents are set up like the cowl hoods are. i think the air-dam is to shoot air into the radiator because we dont really have front grills like most cars to let the air go through. im not sure though.

Thats pretty cool looking. If I remember right (car is away for the winter) all that'd holding those vents on is 2 screws. Just space out the screws or put longer ones in place of the stock ones and I think it'd work. I wonder if he cut out behind the plastic black piece too?

Re: Hood Vents?

Could it hurt?

I've seen the grills that MBA makes for the vents, but I was thinking of just taking them out and leaving them open.
The intial intent of the MBA grill was to allow the silly little plastic plates to be removed from the hood piece itself and give one the opportunity to remove a portion of the plastic from behind the grill mounting surface..... hence allowing some air flow (flow in or out, which ever way you think)

As in this:

Ever see a Chevelle's hood with the cowl on it? I've always liked how that little cowl thing raises up and down.

Wouldn't it be neat if those extractors that pure energy made went up and down? Say, if he is driving around normally, they are down. When he goes WOT, they open up for heat to escape.

And if he is idling in traffic, he could flip a switch and have them flip up.

Just an idea, I have no clue on how it could be done to work.

I believe the air dam is used to help push air up in the radiator to help cool the radiator down while driving. I just saw that's what Nick said but I'll post it anyway

In So Cal it gets hot in the Summer... not Vegas hot but hot enough. Driving in rush hour, it works great!!! I can see heat waves just rising above the windshield wiper.

True at speed, it doesn't extract heat but inducts it. Just stick your hand out the window at speed. Just opening the window a little and you can feel the air circulate. I've noticed that it keeps the temps really cool under load (80 MPH). The wind enters the engine compartment which is very turbulant. It tumbles air under the car and out the rear.

Road racing at 160 MPH and you'll feel air lift under the car... but not likely to happen on the streets. But that's another story...

What about the vents on the 93-97 Firebirds, is it possible to do anything with those vents? I believe they actually sit after the radiator support so would that cause better flow thru the radiators or would it cause nothing?
