"hidden" or stealth gauge install

Hey folks, I would like to find a way to install some gauges BUT also be able to hide them. I know that the 2 5/8" Autometer Gauges fint nicely in the dash heating vents once plastic diffuser is poped off but I would like to have them behind the diffuser and be able to hide them by closing it. Anyone have any ideas or actually done a stealth gauge install?
Thanks

I'd hate to have to look down to check a guage

Hmmm... should I give away some of my ideas... hmm... I guess... seeing most probably won't be able to implement it...

You could always customize a set of Digital gauges, imbed them in the dash, like a HUD, and switch them... that way they could appear on the windshield, or be turned off and disappear...

One of many tricks that I have stored in my head...

Yeah, you do have to look down, but it looks cool as hell. I don't exactly check it while I'm driving or racing, I just check the temp every once in a while.

Now I don't suggest putting your speedo or gas gauge there.

The digital HUD is a very slick idea. Probably cost big coin but I might look around to see what is available just out of curiosity...
Anyone seen any nice installs of computer LCD's... That was another idea I had....

Yes I have one, it's where the the tray thing / cig lighter used to be, and looks very cool. Unfortunately I don't have any way to post a picture.

By the way that HUD display idea isn't as simple as it sounds, since the characters would reflect backwards, so you'd need a special backwards character set for the display, and everything would have to be spelled backwards.

Correct me if I'm wrong... doesn't the Corvette Z06 have a HUD dispay...just wondering if you can purchase it separately, but then again, it would cost an arm and a leg, plus I believe the unit itself is underneath the dashboard, projecting into the windshield...don't know how if there's room in our cars....just a thought.

They make a universal HUD it's only either a tach or speedo though

Yes, this is true... this is one of the tricks that you have to be able to fix... simple soldering iron and some electronics knowledge is all that is needed.

I've looked into HUDs for years... the only ones that will work are the Defi VSDII (The one the link points to at LPE), and the Holosport 597. The limitation is depth, our dashes don't have squat for mounting depth; thus I would've already grafted a Grand Prix red unit in my car years ago if we did. I'm waiting for the Holosport to be officially released, and then I'm grafting that into the dash.
