hit the front of your car with a hammer first... then it won't go off in your face

Re: help on removing steering wheel

you have to have the air bag go off don't you?, but the safest way to set it off is to find the yellow wires and connectors under the dash put on some safety goggles and ear protection and start messing with the wires.

Are you F'n serious? lol Just disconnect the battery and pull the airbag fuse. Here's a writeup you can kinda go by...quite simple, but still be careful...anything can happen.

Most definitely. It could still somehow deploy and it would be most uncomfortable. Becareful not to lose the cog or spring if you plan to reinstall the wheel or both wheel and airbag. Without the cog, (which lies under the airbag) your steering wheel will have vertical play in it. In otherwords, you'll be able to wiggle the wheel around even without using the tilt handle. You can't "adjust" the wheel w/o the tilt handle, just wiggle it. This makes for play in the steering column and makes it difficult to align the front it- you may get it aligned, but it will come out of alignment easy. If you have play in your wheel already, that means the cog is already broken and you should replace it while you're in there anyway.

Don't deploy the bag in the car. It smells awful and the dust is hard to get rid of...totally not worth the 2.4 seconds of excitement.

Re: help on removing steering wheel

I always did the battery, fuse, as well as unplugging the connector underneath the steering wheel for the drivers side (one on the passenger side too but i couldn't get to it). Dunno if it mattered or not but theyve got a reserve power module if the battery dosen't work so I didn't want to take chances.

Re: help on removing steering wheel

Its also recommended that you wait at least 20 minutes after pulling the fuse/disconnecting the battery. The DERM module stores power so that the airbag can be deployed if the electrical system is damaged. It takes a few minutes for the storage capacitor to bleed down.

Give me some more info on the cog. Got a pic or p/n? My wheel has had play in it ever since I got it. I would love to get rid of it.
