Help need some sanding tips?

sanding my satin billet radiator cover for my 94z. started out with 220 grit and got all the gray finish off-then went to 400grit and it is shinny now. how do i know when to stop and starting buffing the surface with polish? it is a hell of a long process with sanding it all by hand and polishing it. i guess there is maybe no right amount of time spent for sanding? the longer you sand it then polish it the shinner it would be? does that answer my own question?

Yep you answered your own question. After 400 go to 600, then a rubbing compound, then polishing compound, etc. I really think you're not going to see the results you're looking for without using a large polisher, like I have here:
