Headliner replacement

Two questions regarding headliner replacement for a '94 Camaro:

1. Has anyone done this? How difficult is it to replace?

2. Is the factory interior headliners still available or should I take it to an upholstery shop to match fabric / recover?

Someone popped a hole in mine; the structure is in OK condition. Just need new fabric covering.

Thanks for the advice,

Jim Miles

i replaced mine.didnt come out right.the material is about 7.00 a yard.buy 2 yards.it's just hard if you have t-top's,because of the angle's.if you think you can do it,try it.just scrape all the old glue off real good.get the glue you spray with a air compressor(not a can)thats where i messed up.and cut it out about 2 or more inche's than you need(if you got t-top's)and stretch and pull it around the angle's.

this is what i did.if there is a better way someone please correct me.good luck

I just replaced the headline in my 94 Z28. It was very simple. I found a detail supply store in the area that carried the materials I needed. Call a headliner repair shop in your area and ask where they get their supplies.

Materials were about 20 bucks, 13 dollars for the headliner material and 7 dollars for the glue. Make sure you buy the proper glue. It sprays out something similar to the string in a can or whatever it's called, but obviously not as thick. You will need 2 yards. I'm assuming you dont have t-tops.

Here were the steps I took:

1. remove the dome light asembly on the rear of the headliner
2. remove the interior plastic trim alongside the windshield, both sides
3. on the rear panels, pull out the the tabs used to put the coat hanger on, you dont have to take out the whole panel, just move it enough to get the h-liner out
4. remove both sunvisors
5. after everything is out of the way, pull out the h-liner. easiest way i found was open up the hatch and slide it right out the back. be careful in this step. dont want to cause any undue damage
6. now that the h-liner is out the fun starts, pull off the old h-liner till their is only glue. I used a wire brush to scrub off the old glue
7. clean off glue dust
8.when spraying on the glue or adhesive, be sure to spray both the headliner and the underside of the h-liner cloth, the blackside, be generous with the glue but dont go nuts. I was told to make sure to spray both, if you only spray the shell and not the headliner, it will start to sag alot sooner
9. after you have sprayed the glue, carefully center the cloth h-liner over the shell, starting on one side and slowly work your way over. i used a clean rag and gently rubbed the cloth on to the shell till it was smooth
10. let dry overnight and install

I forgot to mention. I used razor blades to cut the material. Make sure to have sharp razor blades. After the headliner dried, I used the blades to cut around the dome light and the sun visors. Also leave about 2 to 3 inches overlap on all 4 sides, just in case you make a mistake.

Just do the reverse when you reinstall the headliner. It really isnt that hard to do your own headliner, just be patient.

If you have any problems, email me.
