Grant Formula GT Steering wheel

I'm in the process of installing the #710 steering wheel in the place of my stock wheel in my 1994 Z28, and I was wondering for those who have done this before, after you pulled the stock wheel, did you also remove the airbag coil or did you leave it in place? If I leave it in place, the yellow wire prevents the grant adapter from seating (unless I break off the yellow wire/connector?) but if I remove the coil, there is a big void between the adapter hub and the steering column, although the hub seems to be sitting tight in place? What should I do?

I removed the complete coil and wiring harness. Works fine that way.

Ok thanks again, for the horn wiring, did you just use the one wire supplied in the install kit? Seems to me the stock wheel had 2 wires and a ground? I wired it with the one wire method and the horn works fine... although I will have to take it apart again anyways to grind the steering column down a little bit in certain places it's rubbing when I turn the wheel.

Here is a picture of the end result, for those who are interested.

Just used the single wire for the horn. And yes, the Grant trim piece is slightly smaller than the 4th Gen steering column housing, and I also had to lightly sand the end of the housing to eliminate rubbing.

I also ditched the "spider" and tacky rubber bellows that fills the space immedately behing the steering wheel, and used the "billet" spacer. Much cleaner.

Looks good, I just got done installing mine last week and love it. Just looks much cleaner than the bulky stock wheel. I also just used one of the wires for the horn and it works great. I just used some washers to space the adapter hub a little further out and that eliminated the rubbing on the column.

Thanks! I'm liking it MUCH better then the stock wheel also. And for the rubbing I just grinded the edge of the column with a dremel and it worked great.

Looks good. I thought it was illegal to remove the steering/airbag? No?

I'm not sure about the legal aspect... You may be right although I'm not too worried, I don't usually get much trouble from the cops here. Also from what I understand if a car gets into an accident the owner doesn't have to replace the airbags? And what about if I bought my car this way? How would anyone know it wasn't this way before? It doesn't seem like an issue that would actually get me into trouble.

I'm more worried about the security aspect, although I have my eyes on a set of corbeau seats right now and may eventually buy a racing harness for them.

Re: Grant Formula GT Steering wheel

I'm not aware of any legal requirements for air bags. My 5-point harnesses aren't DOT approved, so I know they aren't street legal.........
