Re: Entire car conversions
Why would somebody do that? Just buy another friggin car? Why go through all that trouble and all that money when you could just get a totally different car.......

Re: Entire car conversions
Could be done. Since you said paint and labor wren't an issue I assume you know how/can to weld and all that good stuff or know someone who can do it cheap or free. I think the hardest part is going to be swapping the quarter panels. This is just assuming that the chasis is all the same dimentions.
Even the quarters would be all that hard, just time consuming. Obviously you know that you'd need bumpers fenders and doors, along with the headlight assy and header panel. The only thing I would question is the roof. Are they the same from maro to bird? I'm not 100% either way but you may get away with not having to put on a new skin.
I think you could do it without a whole lot of trouble, But I haven't seen or heard of anyone trying to do it before.

roofs are the same, windshield is the same. hatch should come as an assembly or you'e need a new hatch/glass.
rear quarters need to be cut off and welded on. header pannel (where the lights are on the camaro) has to be completely removed and headlight assembly-motors, new front fenders, new hood, new front bumpers, new rear quarters, new doors. that's it (i think) except for aesthetics ... interior/intake/wheels/buttons/switches...you get the point.

I dunno, seems like a hell of a lot of work to me.
Could save a lot of money and trouble if you just try and locate a Firebird outside of your living area......going and picking it up or having it shipped isn't the end of the world.

Re: Entire car conversions
Damn, I completely forgot. Seems like every magazine I've been reading lately has an article about, I think it's resto rods, that are putting first gen sheet metal on fourth gen chassis. If I recall correctly they had to streach the wheel base a bit along with a slue of other mods to mount the panels. I doubt that doing a bird conversion would be as difficult. That could truley be a bolt on swap. (minus the welding of the quarters)
If you don't want to start all over you've got two options. Buy a bird and swap the drivetrain, or do your body swap idea. Then it all comes down to the all mighty dollar.
