Engine Detailing

What is the best way to detail an engine. I want to detail my LS1, and I was wondering if it is ok to use Gunk and a hose down.
Should I cover anything up before hand. I do not want to short out or reuin any electrical parts.

Thanks in advance.

I use simple green, wire brush and a TON of elbow grease. when everything is clean i use a SPRAY bottle w/ water (no hose) and a cloth to cover up electricals when spraying. wipe off. then...

the secret ingredient: WD-40

When everything is clean spray on some WD-40 on metal/plastic (no electrical stuff) in nice even coats (dont wipe it off....unless it starts to run/drip) you will be AMAZEDwith your results

BTW: i know it sounds strange, but i leared from a very experinced car detailer who really knows his stuff

CD-2 Detailing Spray is good for detailing, use Simple Green to clean it up with or you can use the CD-2 degreaser. Let us know how it turns out.

Yep, CD2 works wonders! It is easy to use, and the results are phenomenal.

I wipe it all down by hand with simple green, and to finish it off I spray it down with armourall fire it up and get her nice and hot,the armourall turns in to like a clear coat with the heat under the hood. Been doing it for years, give it a try.

Will try th esimple green. With few dogs around the house I think that is the safest way to go.

Thanks for the inputs.

A wire brush...?

Better not use an old school wire brush!

It'd have to be some REALLY soft brass or something. I wouldn't use anything stiffer that a toothbrush unless I was cleaning an aircraft carrier or something...

You didn't specify what you were using it on in your first post. In fact, the "...when everything is clean..." comment makes it sound like you use it on everything...

So a rookie detailer might go out, buy a wire brush and proceed to scratch the hell out of their engine compartments paint and other finishes.
