Door Handle

My driver side dooor handle has started to rattle when I close the door.Is there a spring or something in there that might have come loose or fallen out?The handle also is now making a clanking noise too. It's driving me nuts.Any help PLEASE.

Re: Door Handle

Here is an "ok" picture of what you're dealing with. A couple bolts accessed from the inside

Re: Door Handle

Over time the door handle will loosen up. I think the spring that pulls the handle back down just gets worn out after all that use. I had to repaint mine so I just bought new GM ones and that solved my rattels. Now when I close my door, it sounds solid, like a new car. Those two nut/clips that hold the handle on weren't loose on mine, but if your inside the door for another reason, you might want to check them to make sure they are tight.

Re: Door Handle

Yes, there is indeed a spring that keeps the handle from rattling. My passenger side one fell off and has rattled for 5 years and the bolts holding it on are at the proper torque. If you find out the GM part # for the spring, please let me know!

Re: Door Handle

Ok from what I have found if you what to make it quit rattling you have to replace the whole outside handle assembly. They just don't sell the spring.Whole thing is like 42.00 buck for the assembly.Just one more project added to the list.

Re: Door Handle

That sucks!!! I'd suggest checking the junkyards. I believe you can remove the spring without taking the door apart.

Re: Door Handle

I got lucky, I took it to a friend of mine and we pulled the panel off and the nuts were loose.tightend them up and no more rattle.I had already got the new handle assembly though, gonna take it back in the morning.

Re: Door Handle

Could you possibly pick up a spring at the hardware store that would work?

Re: Door Handle

I thought about that, but after I found the loose nuts on it I didn't really even check to see what the spring looked like.I'm sure you could, most hardware stores like Home Depot and Lowe's around here have a good selection of them. All you would have to do is find one that would hold the handle down snug and small enogh to fit.
