Question Cleaning calipers for paint?

This would be for an on-the-car paint job, with the brush on Duplicolor kit. Don't want to get into taking them off the car at this point and having to bleed brake lines and all that good stuff. Down the road I plan on that.

Brake cleaner? Can you spray brake cleaner onto the calipers while they're on the car without affecting the pads or anything else?

The duplicolor kit comes with a cleaning solution that you use to clean the calipers. That's all I did, and sanded them with a medium grit to get them a little more smooth, but that was just my idea to do that, not required. It worked great, and the paint adhered quite well. It's really easy to do, just make sure you tape off where you don't want the paint.

Yeah I discovered that when I said screw it and just went down and bought a kit. Thanks man.

Was the one can of cleaner enough in your opinion? Or would it be a good idea to go buy another can or two? Do you know if getting any of the cleaner on the pads will create a problem (or is there anything else I should avoid getting the spray on -like the caliper boots)?

You'll want to remove the pads anyways or it would look like crap to paint the pads, trust me i know. I think you may need a couple cans to clean all four calipers depending upon how dirty they are.

I was planning on masking very carefully. I'm pretty good at masking very precisely.

Well, I have a v6... so I only needed the one can for my two front calipers, lol. I taped mine pretty good and had no problems at all, though.

V6's have the same brakes as z28's, which sucks for us. Thats why i went with the 98+ setup.

Yeah but z28s have calipers on all 4, and I only have two.

oh yeah i forgot about that, duh! Yeah that does suck. You have drums on the back? Drums look so bad, i feel for you. My 69 Mach has them and it looks so damn bad, i want to convert to rear disks but it is an original CJ car.

Yeah, I hate the drums. Worst part is that they're getting rusty and with my black wheels, I fear painting them will make the rims look weird, if I just had the money I would do a swap and put rotors on the back.

Re: Cleaning calipers for paint?

On my old car I took the pads out and took the brackets off and painted them separately. I left the calipers attached to the brake lines, but had them hanging from a piece of wire cause I was doing it during a brake job. Masked off really well, sprayed with a can though, and they came out beautifully.

Re: Cleaning calipers for paint?

Your best bet is to use some of Brent's vinyl on the calipers instead of paint stenciling it on there.

I spray painted mine while on the car, just mask and it's fine. I used braked cleaner without removing anything too, everything still works great. Yeah get some of Brent's vinyl it's well worth it.

Re: Cleaning calipers for paint?

I used a vinyl graphic on mine too and it worked out great. I painted the color, applied the graphics, and then cleared over it all. This will help keep the letters from peeling off; it looked great.
