Talking Cheap Interior Door Panel Mod

Red vinyl from local fabric store (JoAnn Etc) cost 9.88 including tax for 4' x 4.5' piece. Also bought a black vinyl & fabric paint to paint the plastic pieces. Had 3m spray adhesive sitting around, so we used that to attach the vinyl to the cloth. A low cost mod for a huge upgrade from the stock graphite/cloth door panels. The speaker cover is the stock graphite color.

Anyone interested, I wrote up an install guide real quick. It's text heavy with only one picture (wasn't planning on writing a guide as I did it). Sorry for that, I'll try and take some pictures of putting it back together to highlight key things. Anyway, hopefully it'll help ya if you want to do it yourself. Once we knew what we were doing, it only took my dad and I an hour or so to do the passenger side door panel.

I did that last year when I installed my leather. The paint will begin to come off over time though b/c the doorpanels are high wear areas. I even went so far as to have mine profesionally died black (they were originally ebony) and you can still see some wear near the bottom bc my shoes hit it and up around handle.

Very nice! Looks very clean and professional.

I may have to try this - just for the heck of it - ain't really planning on keeping my Camaro door panels anyhow.

The vinyl paint will wear off - but its easy to touch up...so no big deal for me really.

Looks good man. One question, when you do this, dont you have to paint ALL the panels inside your car black now?

Well it's worth a try since I bought tweeter mounts and I have holes on the lower cloth. I was going to buy some dummy tweeters to just fill the holes, but this'll work better... I hope!

Yeah, I'm going to have to repaint all of the panels on the inside. I want to slowly but surely redo my entire interior so it's a black/red combo with carbon fiber accents here and there to mix it up. It somewhat reminds me of an old hot rod, with the black interior and then bold red accents and panels.

If your going to paint the rest of your interior try plasti-cotes flexible bumper and trim paint it works way better then there vinyl dye. I've used both and the vinyl dye was absolutely horrible, it didn't stick well to the plastic (yes I did prep it right I know how important that is).

I definitely won't be correcting your work when it comes to painting. My full line of experience is painting the horizontal plastic molding on the exterior sides of the car, tinting my tail lights, and painting these door panels. I guess you learn with experience.
