I dont put my cover on in the winter, I only use it in the summer to keep the sun off of it, UV rays are brutal, plus I mostly ride a motorcycle in the summer so I dont have to full with the cover that much.

No doubt snow and ice are brutal too but I have to drive the car in the winter so there is no sense in covering it.

I dont understand how putting a thin cover on would really protect it from the cold or how snow could do any harm seeing that it is just water, although I guess Acidic Water could be a problem but the cover certainly couldnt hurt. Atleast it would protect from freezing rain and falling ice and such.

They make different kinds. The kind for indoor use (I think that's what all the SLP ones were) aren't for rain and snow and all that. There's a few different companies that make different versions. You're going to want a waterproof one. Can't help with the company too much. I think one has California Custom in the company name and the other might be Cover King. Not sure.
