Cool Buddy is making his own hood. Pretty cool!

A local buddy of mine is just about done making a custom hood for his 95 Z28. He started out with a stock steel hood. He filled in the "vents" and molded on a SS style scoop but narrower and with longer "ridges" going down to the front portion of the hood. While it looks similar to an SS hood it is way different. The scoop area actually goes all the way through to the back of the hood. Instead of the scoop acting as an intake it is a pathway to create a low pressure area. Then, under the SS scoop he has cut/punched ventilation slots in the stock metal. The idea is to have the under scoop area act sort of like a venturi and "suck" the hot air from the engine compartment up through the slots under the scoop and discharge it out the back of the scoop. Will it actually work? I have no idea but it certainly sounds plausible
I went over the other day and took some pics. We even laid the hood on top of the car so you could see kinda what it looked like. I didn't get very good pictures of the punched vents though.

Thumbs up

That's balsy, man! I give him major props for doing that. One question, however: If he can make his own hoodscoop, why didn't he try to go for the ZL1 style? Now THAT would've cool!

The ZL1 style uses a huge scoop... he wanted a smaller and narrower scoop. Plus, and this will answer the other questions, the scoop came from his trashed import hood. He had a killer Honda Delsol (sp?) which had a Kamari hood (or something like that) and some lady pulled out in front of him. He cut the scoop out of the hood and stuck it on a stock steel hood

There was a guy in the lastest issue of Camaro Performers that is put out by Car Craft I think. He used his stock hood and an old hood from a Vette. It looks sweet.

Sorta like a U facing the windshield with a cowl inside of it. May not sound too good but it does look tight.

This is probably a new wave doing the hoods yourself. You can get a custom look out of it so you are different and it is probably cheaper. How hard was it for him to do it? The guy in the magazine said he had never even worked on cars before the Z and somehow he molded fiberglass and stuff? I hope it is that easy.

Great job, looks awesome! I thought about making my own ram air out of the orginal hood, but the time spent will probably not be worth it. On the other hand I do have more time than money--Hmm maybe

[comic book guy]Best...hood...ever[/comic book guy]

Man, I really like that, the longer lines are so sweet. To bad he couldn't get ahold of a lighter fiberglass hood to work with. I'd buy one of those if he'd make me one.

Dude, that sounds like an L-88 style Vette hood. That would look really nice on a Camaro. Got pics?

Cool

I don't know how many hours he has into it, but I do know it is time consuming. Plus, I know he is familiar with this type work. He molded in all the ground effects on his Honda and has done about 10 hoods like this in the past. Could one of us do something like this? I'm sure we could but I wouldn't know where to start or what web page to read. I'm sure there are a lot of web pages talking about how to do fiberglass work like this and it would take a bit of reading but probably wouldn't be undoable

V6 Bbird, I think that was the hood that he had used. It was actually only the scoop. Sorry no pics though. The magazine didn't haven anything but that worthwhile in it so I did not buy it. It was sweet though.

Brent, maybe your friend would be willing to do instructions for you to post on your site. Although kind of late now but hey. Maybe even just tips and tricks or something. Like someone above said, might not be worth the time but I do have more time than money.

I was wondering how much the fiberglass work cost, if not doing it yourself?

Expensive... because it's nasty, smelly, itchy work.

yeah, it was a red 98+ z28 with the L88 scoop molded on, IMHO it is the best 4th gen camaro hood I've ever seen. Otherwise, my favorite 4th gen f-bird is the 2002 Firechicken do-up with the 2 huge openings instead of the 4...

I was thinking the same lines, well, not quite, I hadnt really thought on the hood, but something cool, but I CANT photoshop, but I CAN fiberglass. It'd be nice to know what it'd look like beforehand...

Anyone?
