Question Big Block Hood, Can this be done?

Alright, I have been wanting a big block hood, like the ZL1 style, for quite a while. Can't afford to drop 700 bucks on one though. This guy I work with who does the swap meet thing in his spare time, found a Z-roc hood and bought it. It was damaged, missing a small chunk in corner and a crack in the front left, but in overall decent shape. He's having it repaired. He wants 250 for it but I'm going to trade him an edelbrock torker intake and 200 for it if it comes back looking ok. What I want to know is, if you can relay fiber glass, like he's having done to fix it, why couldn't I, after I get it, have the "stinger" coming out of the air inlet, cut out and replaced with fiber glass to make it flat? Do you think its possible, and has anyone done this. Also, I'd kind of like to know what brand it is. All I know is that the actual scope is shaped just like the ZL1, it DOES not have the triangle shaped ridge down the center, like a cowl induction hood. Does anyone have pics of theirs that I might compare it too, with a brand name? Any help would be greatly appreciated on this guys. Thanks.

It's still not the same style hood even with that stinger removed, but it'll be close though.

Thanks guys, and I know it won't be exactly like the ZL1 hood, but from the looks of it and the looks of the DG motorsports hood, they are almost identical. That is if the stinger is removed.

Didn't you have V6 car with a big block hood? I've seen so many members cars I can't keep them straight, but I think your the one that had a ZL1 style hood on your old car. What brand was it?
Also can someone post some pics of their big block style hoods, ZL1 or Z-roc(stinger style) I just want to find out what brand this one is I'm looking at and what the differences are between it and the ZL1 style hoods, dimensionaly that is. I just what it to look as close as possible for the look I want. If it helps any, I know that this hood is unfinished on the under side, but I figure I can make it look finished while cutting out the stinger. Thanks
Andrew
Oh I just remembered!!!
Someone has a 30th anniversary camaro (white with orange stripes) with Brickyard 400 decals on the doors. It has a Z-roc style hood with a wing and ground effects, and I think that hood was identical to the one I'm looking at. It fact the one I'm looking at is also white with orange stripes. I hope this guy didn't have an accident, it was a sweet looking ride, though it could do without the door decals. If anyone has pics of it, or knows who I'm talking about, could you point me in their direction. I can't remember if I saw that car on here or someplace else. Thanks

I manufacture hoods myself and have often had to modify existing hoods to create my prototypes before the production molds are cast ... I'd be more than happy to walk you through the process.... you are welcome to give me a call at U.S. Exotics... (717) 338-0169.. and ask for Roger

APS95Z28,
Yes that was my old V6 with a RKSPORT big block style hood. That hood is the style that was on the 4th gen ZL1. Here are some pics:
Big Block Hood

The hood u are thinking of modyfying will be closer to the 98+ ZL1, because it has a MUCH taller cowl.

Here is the picture of the Z/Roc Brickyard 400 camaro:

Here is a modified picture showing what it would look like without the stinger... ALOT better in my opinion:

Thanks for the pics pu12en12g, thats exactly what I was looking for. Now that I see that car though, I still don't think the hood I'm looking at is like that. I'm going to have to wait and see when the guy gets the hood back, but I'm about 95% sure it doesn't have the center line from the front to back of the scope. I still can't find any pics of a hood like the one I'm looking at, so maybe I just looked at it wrong. Hopefully not. If anyone has a pic of a Z-roc style hood that is completely flat/smooth on top of the scope, could they please post a pic of it. Thanks.

Has anyone seen the new Camaro Performers magazione published by GMHTP? The guy in there made his own hood and it looks sweet. You should check it out. I want to do soemthing like that too just to be different.

I would but I didnt buy it. The rest of the issue was doo doo and I wasnt going to get it just for that.

Here are some info I remember though.

Red car I think it was a stingray shaker hood scoop which he used. He cut out the hold for it in the hood then did all the fiber glass work himself too. It looks kind of like a raised hole in the hood and inside the hole is a shaker hood that comes out. Pretty sweet and definitely different. The color scheme was red/white too.

Thumbs up

Hey I have that magazine your talking about, and it is indeed sweet looking and one of a kind, that is until someone gets smart and mass produces it. pu12en12g: If you are at all familar with Chevelles, there were cars made in 71-72 called Heavy Chevy's. They were basically Chevelles with a different hood, and stripes, with a small block. They were basically like a v6 Camaro, had the looks but didn't have the performance of the big blocks chevelles, which kept the insurance companies happy, plus they didn't suck the gas, which was of course a big issue also.
The best way to describe that hood is to picture a U-shaped raised lip on the front of the hood. The rounded point, the bottom of the U is facing forward with the sides going back towards the windshield. Now picture a cowl induction hood (approx 2 inch cowl) coming up and out of the inside of the U. Might be hard to picture but thats the best way I can explain it. I wish I had a scanner to post pics for you, maybe someone else can if they have that issue of Camaro Performers. You might be able to find a picture of a Heavy Chevy Chevelle if you do a search for it.
