Also when My Husband & I went to buy our Firehawk hood we called SLP & they said to call Suncoast creations who Manufactors their hoods. because they do not sell them to ppl who do not own SLP Cars but the Manufactor does sell them.
Well the dealership fed you a load of crap... suncoast creations hood is fiberglass and only cost $695+shipping.... the original hood from SLP cost about $1800 and it isnt made of fiberglass... as far as I know it is made out of metal or something, because I had a fiberglass SS hood previously before my car was stolen and wrecked and that hood was very light and and wasnt as stong as the factory hood as you could see it gave a little at the hinge points(you could see tiny dents where the stress or the hood springs was pushing against it)... and I just last week purchased an original SS hood and the material it is made out of is alot heavier and stronger... I can tell you for a fact that Suncoast creations doesnt make the original factory SS hood, its just a replica, or as suncoast puts it on their website, "SS-style hood."

SUNCOAST is SO obviously different than the SS hood it's not even funny...

The suncoast hood looks nothing like the GM SS hood...

ASCD is a very good replica.

So is the one from fiberglass fabricators. Pics in sig.

They (GM/SLP)always advertise the SS/Firehawk/WS6 cars as having a "composite" material hood, which I would think is a plastic base type of material bonded together. Does ANYONE know of a sure way to tell a true SS hood from the many aftermarket varieties????????

ASCD is a crappy hood...

I got my SS hood from ASCD

http://netdial.caribe.net/~highland/camaro.jpg

to say it in a few words... ITS CRAP!!!

I should have payed the additional $900 for the Original SS

This hood does not line up anywhere... as you can see from the pic there is a huge dent in the middle of the bubble and on the sides.. I will take more pics of the car.. I also bought an SS spoiler which it didn't fit correctly either...

I am mega unhappy with their products... I thought they were the next best thing... they are not.

Fiberglass Fabricators make the best looking SS Style Hood... but its not functional. Its so so easy to make functional though...only takes 10 minutes. $500 isnt bad for that sexy looking hood.

i once heard each and every 96-97 SS hood from SLP has the production # stamped on the under side of it towards the front corner. so the hood is #ed very much like the car so they can keep track of them.

I had an RKSport hood on my old 93, but it was horrible to fit and the grill was a screw in POS. My 96 has a much heavier feeling hood, not to mention the fit and finish is about 100 times better.

As for the numbers stamped on them, the only thing I see is Made in Canada and some number with a clock like looking thing underneath it. I assume it relates to date of production, but does not really have any relevance to car VIN or production number. I hope this helps everyone out.

Lightbulb GM HOOD IS FIBERGLASS

I dunno where anyone got their info about the GM hood being metal, but it's not. I have an original GM SS hood and it is DEFINITELY fiberglass up on the top. As far as it being a composite, that's true, because the underside seems to be of a slightly different material. Maybe some kind of resin/plastic. All I know is...there isn't a stitch of metal in the whole thing until you put the metal hinges on. The fact of it having the heavier underside is what makes people think it's metal or something, unlike the aftermarket companies who go for a STRAIGHT glass hood. Just my $.02

OK so far the question still remains...which is the best SS hood??? Apparently all of them suck except the factory hood is where this thread is going like usual. Factory hoods are basically out of the question and hard to find. A better question would be, who makes an SS hood that fits more consistently than the other manufacturers? But I'm interested in Fiberglass Fabricators...anyone else heard anything about their SS hoods?

A GM SS hood isn't hard to find at all...and certainly not out of the question...if you are patient. When I decided to get one...I just kept an eye on ebay...5 days later...I got one on there for 750 bucks. That's not much more than an all glass aftermarket hood...and this one IS factory. I saw another GM hood on there a couple weeks ago go for about the same price as mine. It's all about how fast you have to have it and how patient you are willing to be. Me...I'd much rather pay a 100-200 more dollars for a factory hood and wait a little bit for one to "turn up" than fool with almost any aftermarket hood. Just my $.02

I think you misunderstood what they were telling you. They were telling you they would not sell you a hood, because you do not own an SLP car. Period.

Then, in a separate thought, they were telling you that you could go buy one from Suncoast.

I can assure you that Suncoast doesn't make the hoods for SLP.... they were just trying to be nice rather than just telling you "hell no we won't sell you one" which is basically the bottom line. SLP only sells hoods as replacements on real SS's and Firehawks. This is likely due to a simple supply issue... they are require as a manufacturer to keep a certain number of them on-hand as replacement units.... they cannot AFFORD to sell them to the general public and risk running out for real SLP cars...

No only is Suncoast not the manufacturer of SLP's hoods, Suncoast isn't even the best aftermarket one out there....

Stupid left-field question... did VFN ever come out with their SS hood?

When I visited the shop back in October I saw that uber-Firehawk hood in progress and also saw a cracked GM SS hood that they said was going to be a prototype for a super lightweight SS lookalike hood. Their stock and cowl hoods are unbelieably light. I plan on getting a stock lookalike hood, but if I could get an SS hood weighing under 25 pounds, I would definately go that route!
