back spoiler fin on SS's question

I am going to be searching for a camaro SS to buy here in a couple months, specifically a '99-'02 model. I was a local dealer dealer yesterday and the had a 99,00,01 and I noticed that the 00 and 01 back spoiler fins were flat (didn't have an arch to them) but the 99 had one with a slight arch to it and for me that set the whole car off, just looked more sporty. Was this arched spoiler fin specific to some year models? I know it is a minor detail but I gotta have one with that fin. I originally wanted the '02 just for the fact of low miles and it would the last year model that was made but I saw the '99 and it was a beauty and it had 31,000 miles and the were asking $16,500, as long as it hasn't been abused it should suit me fine but unfortunately I have a job change that has to occur before I can get one so I just want to know what year model to search for. I have done all the research on the engine performance aspects and have come to the conclusion that any from '98-'02 will do but I like the look of the '99 I saw and that style fin is must for the one I end up getting. If anyone knows these details please share them with me. Thanks, Eddie:

get the 02 if the spoilers are diff you can change them alot easier than you can add the extra hp the 02 has. i believe a LS1 SS spoiler is the same 98-02 maybe it was just the color of the car made it noticeable.

There are two different fins, had 3 SS's side by side and only the one had the arched one. But if the later models have it I will go with one of those just for the sake of it being newer or if it possible to change it then that will be an option. Thanks guys!

They were exactly the same except for the height of the arch?

All SS spoilers are arched. If they were flat than it's not an SS but only a Z28.
98 and earlier SS's have two vertical supports one on each side of the third brake light. The 97 and later SS's did not have the vertical supports.
Check the door jams for the SLP sticker and the RPO codes for the SS option.

The non-arched fin is not an SS. They are cloned!

Thanks for all the replies and I have been checking out all SS's and Z28's that I see on the road and I have seen SS's with the "arched" fin and with the "flat" fin. Does anyone think that this may be something that comes on the SLP model SS's?? If I remember correctly last year I looked at a 2002 SS and it had all that camaro had to offer, all SLP and everything else ($34,200) but I believe it had the "flat" fin and this car was brand new so nobody could have changed the badging on it I would think. Maybe it had something to do with which plant they were made at?? Any more insight would be great and thnks again....Eddie

I think what he meant to say is....

get their VIN #s and check with SLP, they should be able to tell you if its a true SS. I think. Not to hijack ur post either, but will a 98-02 SS spoiler fit a 97 Z?

Like everyone has already said, ALL SSs have the arched fin. Every 4th gen Camaro/Firebird was made at the same plant, so that's not it. My guess is the ones you're seeing with flat fins are knock-offs. That or you need to look closer.

Again, every single SS - no exceptions - had the raised or arched fin.

Thanks guys for all the replies!! I now know what to look for and if you have read the postings for this question...beware it seems there are some Z28's being sold as SS's, not that there is too many differences but you want what you think you purchased. I will check autotrader.com tonight or tomorrow and I will post back info on an SS that is (may be gone by now) at a local chevy dealer and it is listed on the site and it was the '00 or '01 and it has the flat fin, just so you guys can see for yourselves why I asked this question in the first place. Thanks again!!

I have seen an SS with a slightly taller spoiler but it did not have the two verticle supports. It was alsmot as if it was the stock camaro spoiler with an inch of hieight and a small lip up in the back. I wasn't sure if this is what you were talking about or if this style I mentioned is the pre 98 SS style spoiler.
