Anyone ever use a ABS plastic welder?
Anyone ever use a ABS plastic welder?
I was searching ebay thinking about trying to make a box or my own custom cd holder or something for my Z now that i have a 97 console in it. I want to make something to fill the space. I found some ABS welders on Ebay, and they are pretty cheap. Has anyone used one? are they easy to use? Do they work? How strong are the welds? I could use this to construct a custom holder and maybe even fix my cracked dash cover.

Re: Anyone ever use a ABS plastic welder?
i used one when i worked for chem-tainer. we made all sorts of containers for farm tractors to carry herbicides, live wells for fishing boats and so on. in some cases it took 2 parts to make one and those 2 parts would hafta be fused together.
we used one and they heat the stick up to where it turns a foggy clear when ran thru the tip and it sticks like a merf when touched to another piece of plastic !!!! its ran by propane gas and is sorta like a torch soldering iron.
be careful though, you can justr as easily burn a hole in the piece you are working on so take a min to test it on another part you arent using to feel it out. there are a few times i wish i had one for various reasons.

Re: Anyone ever use a ABS plastic welder?
I work with ABS , Nylon , polyproplene on a daily basis . All I would say is, it would be VERY tedious and wouldnt be very desireable for a part , like say for an interior . What its gonna do is actually melt the surface of the 2 parts to be fused , therefore if there was any type of texture on the plastic being welded together it would be lost . In the case of ABS and polyproplene(which most automotive interior plastic is made from) , when its heated , it deforms VERY easily . It would more likely than not you would ruin what your trying to fuse together because the heat would deform it . Most interior plastics that are welded together are accomplished with a sonic weld .
I wouldnt waste the money man . That welder is better left for the big stuff like the containers Quickchicken said he used it for .
