Anyone ever throw together a TA spoiler for convertible
Anyone ever throw together a TA spoiler for convertible
I really have grown to love the trans Am rear spoiler, and want one bad for my vert, I know there are no aftermarket solutions, but have you ever seen one custom made or know of any photos of one. I was thinking of getting some junkyard trunklids to see if I could duct tape something together, I figure the parts are pretty cheap now so I wouldn't lose much if I can't get it right.
I've heard of it being done. I think the trick would just be shaving the wing down on the Formy trunk and bolting the TA spoiler to it. Easier said than done I'm sure. If I was going to try this I might also look at Camaro vert trunks, as they're flat already and it might be easier to work on making it fit the space than shaving down the Fomula trunk. Just my two cents. Good luck!

I have seen it, on a 98+ red TA drop top, here in Michigan actually, Lansing to be exact. It was done, in my opinion, poorly. He took the stock high wing, and made it a little higher, by adding fiberglass pedestals. So, it looks stock, sort of, but it is a few inches higher than the high wing. He said it took about 5000 man hours to custom mold the fiberglass, paint, etc, and cost him like 4 grand or something. I think he should get his money back, since it looked like total crap. I think Wings West makes an add on lip for the spoiler, but other than that, I think if you have a drop top, you are pretty much stuck with the low wing, unless you rice it out and add the "commando style" wing

I certainly hope the 5000 man hours is a joke, cuz you're talking a couple of years worth of labor there. Suncoast Creations does make a spoiler for the convertibles/Formulas that looks okay. It's not like the TA spoiler, but, mounts on the stock spoiler and makes it a lot taller for around $300.

OOPS!! The spoiler I was talking about is not made by Suncoast Creations, it's made by Mecham.

I really think it could be done for a lot less than four grand and five thousand hours. The guy is probably trying to make his crap look better by inflating the value. I really think a Camaro vert trunk and a factory TA spoiler would work with minimum modifications. I think you'd just have to cut that bottom piece that goes between the taillights off of the Camaro part. Don't give up so easily!
