you will see a bright flash an the inside turns brownish black because the current wasnt limited and you blew the LED out

Resistors simply just limit the current to the item at hand (in this case the LED) if you use a resistor too large the LED will look dimmed out and not as bright, try hooking a LED to a 9v battery without a resistor an watch what happens

The bulb size is 37 and you can find led replacements that will push right into the stock plug (no modification) on www.ebaymotors.com just do a search for the bulb size.
