97 Camaro Gauge Cluster Options

Are they all the same? I have been told that a 97 will work in a 97,a 98 in a 98,and a 99 in all of them?Is this true? I have also been told that the mileage is stored in th computer,so when I hook up another gauge cluster it will display the correct mileage? I have found some clusters and want to make sure they will work before I get one. Thanks

No they're not the same. You can only use the 97 cluster in your car. I bought a 98 firebird cluster for the bezel. I know the gas gauge wouldn't work with it plugged in, and i think the oil pressure read really high if i remember correctly. Firebirds are wired the same as Camaros of the same year. I forgot why were you wanting to switch clusters? was it because you wanted gauge overlays?

nope. I have one of the first 97 that have the analog trip/odo and I hate it. and yes,the reason is to use overlays. So.i must use a digital gauge cluster from a 97 to work? I'm assuming that the computer has nothing to do with the mileage? I have 73k,and the ones I have found have more than that. this may be more trouble than it's worth.

Oh and yes i forgot to mention mileage is stored in the cluster not the computer. If you want i bought a set of these overlays http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/98-02...mZ110058692175

When i got them i tried to install them i tried to install them the cut outs for the light to show through didn't really line up and they are only correct for 99+ because the temp gauge started at 100 degrees. I emailed the guy and showed him the problem and he said he had a 97-98 cluster he just bought and he'd redesign them for me. In the mean time i just bought the NRauto overlay and installed them. He sent me the redesigned ones in the mail and i still have them. If you want them i'll send them to you free of charge to try. My only request is that you take some pictures of them installed and post you're thoughts/experience with them. There aren't a lot of options for 97-98 Camaro owners that want white face gauges that have the stock look.

Check out Cobra2WS6 in this post he has the same overlays and is pretty happy with them.

Do the needles have to be removed for installation? Since I have the analog trip/odo,how will they work? it appears that the picture show them with a digital gauge? I have found a couple on ebay with 82 and 87k miles. Since I have 73k,it would be a jump. I'll let you know about the overlay, posting pics and my thought s wouldn't be a problem.

Yes they're installed on a digital cluster but it doesn't matter. I believe i told you in an earlier post that the gauges themselves are same its just the area around the actual odometer is different so any 97-98 overlay should work. They don't require removal of the needles either. You can also buy a 97 cluster that'll work for you then just buy a cheap V6 97+ gauge cluster with mileage close to yours and swap it into the V8 cluster.

Hmmm.wasn't aware of the odo swap. So basically,I can get a 97 digital gauge cluster and get a 97 v6 cluster and use that odo?

That shows the removal of an odometer.

I found a cluster on ebay with 82k miles. i found a shop that can send it off to have it match my mileage. I have a question,it is listed as a replacemrnt for a 97-02,so how would I know if it would work? since you told me that only a 97 w/digital would work in a 97 w/o digital.

Well if the temp gauge starts at 160 degrees then its a 97-98 if it starts at 100 its a 99+. Once you narrow it down to a 97-98 then its a 50/50 shot it'll work because a 98 won't work in your car.

Can't tell by the image. I'm going to email him. So basically if the temp starts at 160,then I may or may not get lucky that it will work?

The first line of his ad says its out of an 02 so its not going to work and thats a lot of money to pay for an LS1 cluster.

How did I miss the year?? I didn't see that one and that one is listed as out of a 97 so that would definantly worK? Onlu has 87k,so it's a little higher, but since I'm having it fixed, doesn't matter. Good find,Thanks Wouldn't happen to know how much somebody would charge to correct the mileage, would you.

Nope i have no clue. I'd check on the net. You might find a company last lists their services and prices on the net. If you're wanting to do white face gauges. I'd suggest you check out NRauto.com they're the only company that offers stock looking white faced gauges for 97-98 Camaros. The only thing that sucks is you have to remove the needles to install them because they're a whole new gauge face not just an overlay. The quality is as good as OEM GM, i have them and love them. If you're thinking about them you might want to consider doing them before you have your odometer fixed because the odometer shop might be able to install the needles for you in the correct locations. After you've installed the new face.
