96Z28, Sealed Beam conversion, 6000K HID's ~Pics inside~

Well last night I pulled off my headlights and cut out the bulb and glue and all.

Today I used some gasket maker and put 6000K HIDs in the sealed beam housings. I also wet-sanded the outside to get off any oxidation over the years.

Here what they looked like with the HIDs in the housings.

Heres no headlight.

Heres where I mounted the ballast.

And heres the result!! SO NICE!! Only daytime pics right now. Will have more later on.

Took me about 10 mins to get the old bulbs out of the housings.

About 10 mins to put the HIDs in the housings.

10 mins to mount the Ballasts

And about 20 mins to hook both them up and tighten everything back up.

So all in all about 50 mins, maybe an hour. Very Easy install...even had lunch during it haha

Cops around here are pretty strict on letting people do HID conversions without proper projection lenses. $150 fine and they tow your car if you blind them.

Where did you buy the HIDs from and how much did they cost?

They are great. Ive had sets for my Neon and my Durango and they are great, have had for over a year on both cars, not one blown bulb yet, and better yet

The kits only $89- with a 6 month warranty

I feel you. Where I live, 75% of the cars have HIDs. And most cops are all in their 20s and 30s so they all dont care. Honestly

And most importantly. I have bad eyes and now i will be able to see better at night. But I will aim them lower than usual so I dont blind anyone.

How did you run the wiring? Specifically, what did you plug into the ballasts? I know the HID kit has wiring from the ballasts to the HID's, but do you just plug in what goes to the headlight into the ballast?

I've done the bulb conversion with the eurolamp kit and then added a HID kit. You're right about needing the projector lens. The standard sealed beam housing just doesn't seem to help with the HID and apparently oncoming traffic is affected adversely. Already an oncoming driver drifted into my lane; I think it was to let me know my lights were blinding. A lot of money invested and I'm disappointed with the results.

Does anyone actually sell projector housings for this rectangular style?

There is no projector housings in anything but round lenses. Having HID's in stock housings, or aftermarket ones that may be more clear will still yeild much more light capacity over the factory halogens, but as you brought up, without being used in conjuction with projector lenses, the HID's are not focused or cannot be aimed, so they are very bright to everyone including other drivers.

FocuzTech is a company based in Washington that is currently making an aftermarket headlamp kit for the 93-97 Camaro's. (For more information on this, start a search on a thread started by me called "Who would be interested in a new headlamp assembly for the 93-97 Camaro's"). Once the headlamp does come out (they are now expected sometime in 2009), they will have Hella projector lenses, making it easy for those of us with the HID's to best use them. And for others that may not have yet done the HID upgrade to the stock lenses, FocuzTech has stated that HID's will be included in the numerous options for the new headlamps.

Other than that, some people have done direct Hella 90mm lense swaps for the rectangular headlamps. There are a couple really good write ups on this. I can post up links for anyone who might be interested.
