The part stores out here don't carry the factory size on the shelf I also have the factory ss intake and I've never been able to find one that fits. Even if you look in the k&n book it says for 96 camaro v8 (except ss) the one for the ss is taller and fills in the air box perfectly I have the one that's listed in the book and the one I ordered from slp I can take pics to show the difference a bit later on.

So odd, i can remember mine fit fine in the factory ss box. I never paid attention to the thickness tho, it could have been thinner. Didn't realize the original paper filter was so thick. I wish i had the car still, i would measure it!

I think I threw the z28 filter away I cant find it but I ran that one for a few years until I went on slp's website and saw that the one they had on there looked different. The z28 filter worked fine but I had to cut away about 1/2 inch from the rubber edge because I couldn't close the lid all the way and there was a 1 inch gap from top of the filter to the ceiling of the airbox. Although I was able to find a paper one at the store but it was for another vehicle cant remember which one.

You can run a K&N filter in a 96-97 SS airbox, though some people recommend against it claiming dirt/debris can get into the intake.

I've ran one for 4+ years now without any issues. You'll want to use K&N part number 33-2018. It is for a 2.5L and 4.0L Jeeps and fits quite well.

On a side note Carboncamaro what wheels are those?
Hey is there any chance you can send me a link to the filter that you bought from slp?

SLP no longer sells the blackwing filter for '96-97 LT1 SS cars. You can buy it from a third party vender though (such as Jegs, Summit, or one of our Supporting Vendors)

Shoot. Well can you give me links to them? I dont believe the set up I bought is factory, but it is the type that sits on top of the engine to take advantage of the functional hood. I opening for the filter on the tube is 4 1/4in by 9 3/4in. Any help finding a filter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Here's a pic of the one I have like I said earlier I couldn't find the z28 filter so you can see the difference but this one is twice the height as that one.

Totally just found what type of intake I have and what filter I need. This was pure luck that I stumbled upon. It is a suncoast ram air intake:

21001K - Ram Air Interface Air Box Kit

It takes a K&N 33-2042 filter. I am not sure if this helps anyone else, but it sure helps me out a ton. I can't find more than one or two pictures out there of people running these...guess once I get mine on I will have to take lots of pictures

The SLP part number is 21004, you should be able to google for it and find some links.

I still havent attempted to put the air setup on, but just wanted to show how far I am on the car. Still might put some stripes on the sides of the scoop, but other than that the exterior is about done.

Bringing this one back.....

Anyone have pics of a red SS with stripes, like the white w/hugger 30th anniversary car? My 97 is red and thinking about black or silver stripes...
