1st Appearance Mods?

I am young and have a 86 z28 in red with no wing and everything else is stock and in bad condition.

1. Is a hood scoop worth the money and which one do you think looks the best for the money in your opinion?

2. How hard is it to replace the carpet, headliner, and the top portion of my dash which crack horribly from the sun?

3. Is there anything I can do to stop my dooring from creaking so bad. I oiled it up well but its where the guide rolls over that hump?

4. How hard is it to replace the steering wheel with something more modern?

5. Is it worth the time to install a box in the back portion of the truck area for speakers, etc?

6. Whats the proper size, width, etc and how do I know which wheels will fit properly? Any of you guys have suggestions, its a 86.

1. What kind of hood scoop? SS style? I think it looks really good on 3rd gens. You won't get any kind of performance increase from it though.

2. None of things are extremely difficult to replace with enough time put in. You will run into moments of frustration but with some effort you'll have it done.

3. I really couldn't answer this one because of lack of experience but, if it were me I'd try to find the part making noise and grease the hell out it. Dunno man, good luck with it.

4. No, not difficult in the least - unless by modern you are looking for an airbag, then yes - I'd say it would be very hard.

5. Yes, addding a box for speakers or subs is definetly worth it, as long as you are willing to get rid of you trunk in the process.

6. Your wheels are lug nut pattern 5 on 4 by .75 - fairly common.

Be patient and wait a bit longer for replies before putting your post to the top in the future, it's boxing day after all and people are busy. They will get to you though.

Good luck man.

Re: 1st Appearance Mods?

Sell it and go buy a 4th gen F-Body No but seriously a 93-97 Z28
with decent miles goes for well under 10K .

Re: 1st Appearance Mods?

Well I am almost 16 and living in South Bend, Indiana where we get some bad weather at times. I bought this thing for real cheap earlier this year and was going to fix it up just a little bit. We get a pretty good winter here and my parents are nice so they will prob buy me a winter vehicle so this was going to be speed machine to put my money into for now. I have alot of work to do but I was just trying to find some ways to make it look a little better and so far it looks like a different hood and interior are all I really need. I need new carper, new headliner, front spoiler, exhaust tips, hood louvers maybe, and a new dash which got cracked from sun light

Re: 1st Appearance Mods?

I think it's a good first car to start out your Z28 obsession

1. I don't know if a hood scoop would look good on your car... Personally, I don't think so but it's a matter of opinion... If it's a Z28, it should already have the 2 louvered "scoops" on the hood.

2. Carpets not really a big deal... Just removing the seats, and center console basically... Headliner might be a little more tricky because of the awkwardness of the size, but fairly simple.. As is the dash.

3. 3rd gens have a problem with sagging doors... Sounds like maybe the hinges are worn if greasing them doesn't fix it.

4. You'll need a steering wheel puller to get it off... You can buy one cheap or if you have an Autozone near you, they have loaner tools.

THIS is a great message board to find things about your 3rd gen Z28.

Good luck and have fun

Re: 1st Appearance Mods?

I don't think you should sell it, if it makes you happy, keep it! I want a third gen just as much as I want a fourth gen, they both have their positives and negatives, but I think a third gen, to me, would have more potential to look the way I wanted a car to look. I love cowl hoods, there's about an inch difference between classy and ridculous, so look into it. If you do get a hood, you should get a wing, one of the stock 91 or 92 camaro high rise spoilers, nothing looks better on the rear of a camaro. +1 on thirdgen.org being a great site, ask the same question over there and you'll get some great help, they really know how to make the third gens look amazing

Re: 1st Appearance Mods?

Alright well right now I got the entire thing is gutted and scraped and Im fixing rust spots as we speak so as soon as I lay down some red enamel inside and finish up with my undercoating I will being buying all theese parts I need. As for all of you guys that say sell it your ignorant because you payed 25,000 for something I will have the equivelant to for 3,000 give or take when I'm done. This just a opinion but I do not like 50% of the fourth gens I see, Im ashamed that my friends dont know ones a Camaro when it passes. Im only 16 which I hope I wont get flamed for but this is defidently where I want to start.

I am going to be putting my money towards carpet, headliner, top dash panel, stereo (my dad will help me with that), and then any money I get after that will rather go to exterior things such as a better looking hood or engine. Im thinking about swapping out my motor since its a 305 Q-jet which has been finicky since I got the car. I will probably set a 350 in there when I get the chance and later on if I really need power I will stroke/bore it out to the 383.

Re: 1st Appearance Mods?

haha, maybe not a great idea to ask for help and then say you don't like fourth gens, on a board mostly populated by guys with fourth gens. But your idea sounds great, I would recomend an alarm system before you throw in a stereo, trust me, it sucks having stuff ripped off, and even if your town is safe, there's still some guy that sets out to ruin your day. Take a look at thirdgen.org, the guys there really give you something to look foreward to, they really know how to do up a third gen

Re: 1st Appearance Mods?

Its not that I dont like them, its that I dont like what people do with them. If you look most of them are owned by punks who just stick rims/exhaust on and then try to brag. They look good when they have a good paint job and maybe something like a small ss hood on. The only thing I dont like about 4th gens are the look of the side view mirrors, the styling overall is a little bland when compared to previous gens also.
