17x11 on Verts, Myth or...?
Ok AFS wheels says 17x11 won't fit on the verts due to something about their compartment for the top. Anyone heard this?? Thanx in advance. I would like to pick up some black zr1s from them but the package i want is 17x11...
From what I understand, even in a hard top, you would more than likely have to bang out some of the wheel wells to get 11's to fit...in the convertible, you can't do that at all because components for the top are all right in there. That's not to say you could do a LITTLE, but not a lot. I've never heard of anyone fitting 11's under there on the vert...all I've ever heard is that it can't be done. (uh oh...I think I'm smellin a challenge!)
A friend of mine had the genuine GM Grand Sport 17x11's on his 1997 30th SS convertible, with BFG Comp T/A 315/35's, and they fit in his wheel wells better than the AFS 50mm replicas (same dimension as the Grand Sport) fit in my Formula coupe. I spent a lot of time working on his car, including fitting a variety of drag slicks up to 28x10.5-15W and visually, the dimensions and shape of the convertible wheel wells were no different that the coupe. What was different was some extra metal reinforcing that was located behind the sheet metal inner fender liners... it was on the convertible, but not on my coupe.
He did roll the fender lips up under a little, and hammered the inner fender liner, just as I did on my coupe. The only time he had any trouble at all was after he took the front sway bar completely off, and the body roll increased enough to put the inner fender liner into the side of the tire.... but a gentle application of a 3# hammer fixed that, just as it did in my coupe.
