Windage trays, whats everyones opinion?

Was building a 408w Ford and was interested in everyones opinions and experience? I know that if there was power to be had, there isn't much. I was more interested in oil control and your experience with either a diamond or louvered trays or anything in between. I have a diamond one I was going to use, but was thinking about swapping to the Moroso louvered piece.

thanks
Jeremy

Oil control makes power, every time. I use Champ pans that out of the box have windage tray/screen, crank scrapper, and trap doors. This eliminates a lot of the hassle with setting up those components individually.

408w in the stock block? Sportsman? FRPP? What is the use for the motor going to be, and what are the rest of the parts in it?

Rear sump & stock '72 block

Right now I have the Moroso oil pan for the Fox 351w swap and a Canton diamond windage tray. The pan has baffles and, if I remember right, crank scrapper. I havn't got a chance to put everything together since I need to pull apart the short block that my machinist put together to make sure he did it right. He fill fit my rings, but I don't think they are fill fit. Plus he told me he set the second ring gap at .012 which sounds very tight with everything I've heard and read.

Edit: That is actually a really good price for all that. Have you had any experience with their pans? Sounds like a deal worth selling all my crap for.

Champ Pans is all we use in everything from mild torque motors, to street hot-rods, and our road race dry sump setups. They are very high quality and the best bang for the buck IMO.

I don't have a windage tray. I use a deep sump pan and keep the oil level below the baffle. The oil isn't high enough to be whipped up by the crank.

oil control= good things for your engine. They're cheap too, I've used louvered and and diamond trays. Haven't noticed a difference between any of them, but I won't build an engine without one.

The only reason I really gave it any thought was that all new OEM engines I've seen have some kind of windage tray in them. I figure they know more about it than anyone else and they wouldn't put them in there if they were not worth something.

You have that right. If it was not needed it would not be in there.

Windage tray and oil control is huge if your squeeking every bit of HP out of your combination. A deep pan often times really splashes the oil on the crank upon the launch.
