Will an alternator work o.k. if spun in either direction?
Will an alternator work o.k. if spun in either direction?
Having a heck of a time fitting an alternator in my drag car, and am considering mounting it with the pulley facing the rear of the car, which would mean opposite rotation. The alternator is the mid 70`s style, one wire alt. ( internal regulator)
I'm thinking it can be spun both ways, since it produces AC current that is regulated to DC.
Anyone know for sure ?

There shouldn't be a big problem with this. The output may be less than rated, as I believe alternators are "timed" in a similar manner to brushed motors. If it's going in a drag car, this probably isn't a big deal.
The only thing that I can see as a concern is that the fan may not cool the alt. properly going backwards. See if the fan can be swapped a round. Try having an auto parts store do a alt. test running it in both directions and see what the results are.
