Where is the mileage stored?

Not sure where to post this but thought some of the guys that post in this section may know. Where is the mileage stored on the car. is it in the cluster itself or somewhere else? What I am asking is if I buy a new cluster will it 0 it out? I never plan on selling the car and am not trying to scam anyone. Just doing so much stuff to it and once the new motor goes in I don't want to have to look at 211k and counting. Thanks, Jarred

PCM stores it. Easily read with a scanner, but even LT1_Edit can't edit it. This requires a Tech-2 to reflash the PCM. Anyone other than a GM-licensed dealership doing so (and filing the appropriate paper work) on a road-going vehicles needs to understand they are doing the equivalent of turning back an odometer... and they're obviously legal implications involved.

Besides... there's plenty more than just "engine wear" to worry about. "fixing" the odometer also makes it difficult to know what milage are on your bushings, shocks, springs, carpeting, everything.

Then there's the issue with registration and carfax services that monitor your milage upon title tranferes, emmisssions checks, shop work, etc... the next time you were to get work done on the car, or worse, emmissions tested the car you'd have an easy trail to find out what happened.

Accept the fact that the car is 200,000+ miles old (regardless of the engine) and move on. Trust me, it ain't worth it.

Closing due to the fact that even if you wanted to know this for good reasons, others might want to use the info for other reasons...
