Using 96/97 Crank trigger instead of an MSD unit

Is it possible/has anybody ever tried to use the 96-97 LT* crank sensor instead of an MSD flying magnet trigger when trying to eliminate the Opticrap? I will be using a FAST engine management, and this would just seem to be way easier and cheaper.

Also, in your opinions, whats the best way to get a cam signal?
I know theres quite a few different ways to do this, and I am going to try building my own using the existing Opti, cut it down and modify its cam drive to simply pickup a signal using a hall effect switch. I was just wondering what would be the best methods taht you know of that work right now?
