Tunnel Ram Shootout
Tunnel Ram Shootout
Does anyone know the major design differences between a Weiand Hi-Ram and an Edelbrock Street Tunnel Ram? They are about the same height, what about the plenum volume? I know the Weiand's are popular, due to the Summit Hi-Ram/Carb kit for $600 bucks. I'm looking for maximum top end performance, bottom end torque is no issue.
I don't know that there are many that have had the chance to
try both types of manifolds.
I would imagine the differences are going to be slim if the runner
lengths (& volume) are equal and plenums are the same.
The above being true, the manifolds will produce power in similar
RPM windows.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the deciding factor here is going to
be price and brand loyalty for the average street/strip application?

They are the same price within $2 so I'm gonna go with the Weiand, they seem to be more for top-end performance whereas Edelbrock are true-street tunnel rams aimed at producing mid range rather than top end and have a 7500rpm "max" whereas the Weiand is supposed to pull to 8k. Maybe one day I'll try both n get em dyno'd
I have plenty of experience with the Weiand Pro Hi Ram. I have run one on a few big blocks and had excellent results with it. The Weiand has slightly longer runners and a smaller plenum. The 433 inch engine I ran it on pulled very strong to 7800. I hope this helps.Tunnel ram
Would you say there is a significant difference in the power made by a tunnel ram vs. a single plane (such as edel. victor jr) with a single carb? I know Tunnel Rams are supposed to make more power, and I am primarily doing it for the aesthetic reasons, but I was wondering if I'd make just as much power and better torque by using a super victor intake and a dominator carb, or if tunnel rams just hands down produce higher hp due to runner design and plenum volume that just cant be had by a single plane?
With a single carb, I have to go with a good single plane manifold like the Super Vic. The Jr. has shorter, flatter runners which don't help if you are in the 500+hp range on a 250-400 SBC.
If your heads are reasonably good, and you cam it correctly, mid range torque will be surprisingly good, and top end also.
If you are talking SBC, how much carb flow do you think you need? I guess more engine data would be useful.
My $.02
