Question total seal rings

i am building a 383 with a 4" bore and a 3.75" stroke with 6" rods
whe pistons i am using are JE Part Number 178676 but i am wondering what rings to use?

the ring widths are 1/16, 1/16, 3/16

when i look for rings do i need rings that have a STD overbore?

i cant find any total seal TS1 rings with a STD overbore in jegs and summit all they have is .005

do i have to use .005 rings with my 4"bore

If your bore is still standard and will not be bored .030" over, then you need the .005 over rings. They are a file-to-fit ring set for standard bore. This means that you must file the ends to get the correct gap, you cannot just install them. Advantage is you get the exact ring gap you want.

I wouldn't recommend Total Seal rings on any street car except maybe to an enemy. EVERY set I've tried has used oil....every one.

These were all professionally machined blocks with Total Seals recommended block prep. I have spoke with MANY people who've had the same results. You'll find a few that think they work great, but far fewer than those who dislike them for their oiling problems.

I use Speed Pro plasma moly file-fit rings in everything I build now. They seat immediately and do not use oil.

A big amen on the Speed Pro recommendation. Every racer I know has had, or knows someone who's had problems with the TS gapless ring sets. A well machined and blueprinted engine will have low leakdown figures anyways... not the tell-all of engine performance either way.

You technically have a 377 with the standard bore. I'd go with a file fit SP ring-set but it's your money.

I ran totalseal rings in my last engine...the coating on the face of the ring flaked off and caused damage to the cylinder bore...you should have tried a leak down test on my engine after the rings failed....good bye ts, hello speedpro.

rings

I have them on my present blower engine no oiling probs, but have heard strange stories bout them actually causing blowby and dont think theyre worth the added exspense.

JE offers a rings set with the pistons i am purchasing

would it be a good ideal to purchase rings from the piston manufacturer?

That or atleast ask the piston manufacture what rings they reccommend.

I have done it this way for years. JE is an excellent source of both rings and pistons.
