thoughts on iron heads
"Iron is better where weight or looks are not a factor because it retains heat better than aluminum and keeps the heat in the combustion chamber, which is where you want it. Cast iron heads will typically give you about 10 to 15 more horsepower than an identical set of aluminum heads

I was just a little curious what people thought on this. I recently helped built a 514 ford motor with aluminum heads on it and 15.5:1 the car went 143 mph of the trailer. A set of steel heads is going on it now to see what difference it makes. With iron heads what exactly is the heat doing? Is it transfering it where as the aluminum absorbs it?
Just curious

Get a 355 with some big dome pistons and a bunch of C12.
Buy a set of Pro1 Darts and a set of Platinum Darts, and put them on the pump. The motors are going to make the same power.
BTW DON'T SAY STEEL HEADS! THEY ARE MADE OF CAST IRON!
FWIW the only iron heads i've seen worth a crap are 14° Pro Top Line and who knows if RHS is still making those.

There are some good dyno tests to show otherwise that they make the same power.
Dart still makes them because moron rules commitees runing circle tracks still think it's more economical to have a head that you can't fix.
The sick thing is when there are rules that allow you to run a fully ported IRON SBC head angle milled to within a inch of death (like 35cc 23° heads!) and they think that it's economical, what a bunch of morons. Then again they make all the "stock" classes run flat tappet cams because they are cheaper, another idiot move.

David Vizard did a write up on dart Iron and Aluminum BBC heads that's pretty interesting.

Motors are heat pumps - the more heat you can contain in the cylinder/chamber, the more efficient the pump will be. That being said, the difference is negligible, with many much dyno data to back that up - then take in that you can run more compression with aluminum heads and you save weight - the motor purpose built with aluminum heads will get you down the track faster.
My buddy bought a set of 14 degree aluminum heads bear from RHS about a year ago,he called them just after they changed hands and they sold him the last set they had on the shelves for 900 bucks!!He has em sitting under his bed waiting for enough money to build an engine worthy of them.He told me RHS might start producing them again in the future.
