Thin Head Gaskets for LTx cars

Currently using a .029 Impala gasket for about 11.9 to 1 compression and want to bump up the compression to better match a new cam with about 10 degrees more duration.

What thinner LTx gaskets are available and how do you order them? Anyone have any problems with thinner gaskets?? Just trying to keep my dynamic compression right at 9 to 1.

Mr Gasket has one that is .026" with a 4.100" bore. Unless you want to go to a steel shim or a custom one from Cometic, that's the thinnest I know of.

Do you know whom would carry them or just order them on line??

Thank you.

Humm... I just called Summit and they are special order and take 4 weeks. The .029 is looking better all the time.

Cometic's gasket has a 4.035 bore dia and it will bump up the compression more than any other one out there. I got mine at ramchargers

Mr Gasket #5716 is .026" and coated for aluminum heads, i have been using them on LT1s for years. they used to be special order, but for the last couple years both Summit and Jegs have now carried them in stock. only $35 a pair

Cometic can't go smaller than .027" that's the tightest you can get from them for a head gasket.

The Mr Gaskets are the smallest that I know of.

I have a friend considering running the Mr. Gasket set. How well do they hold up to moderate shots of nitrous on a relatively high compression engine 12.5-1? Do they require any special prep he should be aware of? I understand the Cometics like a very smooth surface or they weep.

You gotta dress those copper gaskets. (I assume you meant a copper cometic.) Some folks like to use the copper spray or brush on stuff, others like to put silicone around the water holes, very thinly of course.

Also, after the first time you fire it and let it get up to temperature, shut it off, let it cool a bit and recheck the torque on the bolts.

FWIW, I used a relatively thick cometic copper gasket on an older Iron Head sportster with a 4.625 stroke and really ridiculous compression, that was blowing conventional gaskets out within a day. Admittedly, this was an engine without water passages, but the point is that they held. I never had to replace them again the whole rest of the time I owned the bike.

Re: Thin Head Gaskets for LTx cars

I found that the Victor Reinz (5898 is stamped on the gasket) stock replacement head gasket for a b-body is specified as having a .026 crushed height. I am currently running them in my 11:1 383 with aluminum heads. I purchased them from my local NAPA at $21 a piece.

no, the 5716's come as a pair for $33. trust me, ive used probably 20 sets of them on the many cars i work on. they arent like the FP 1074's that come as singles for $35 each. the summit and jegs tech line people are morons, thats why i order all my parts online. i can take a picture of a pack of 5716's i have sitting here if you dont beleive me

fwiw i cant comment on how much pressure they will hold since i only use the 5716's on stock shortblock combos i build. the most power i have put through those are whatever it takes to run 132mph in a 3600lb car on nitrous. any zero-decked engines will need more than a .026" gasket

Re: Thin Head Gaskets for LTx cars

Surprised nobody brought this up. What is the deck height of your block right now?

If it is any tighter than .010 you couldnt run a tighter head gasket anyway, safely at least.
