Steped caps or flat?

I noticed when you buy Pro-gram's billet 4 bolt-splayed caps you can choose between flat ones and the stepped ones. I know both blocks i have take the stepped ones, are the flat ones better? My machine shop said installing the new caps might cost extra if they have to work on them... are the Pro-gram's easy or hard? He said he's had to spend a few extra hours just to get the caps to work sometimes...

If your block has a step at each end of the main cap get the stepped ones.
Call ProGram and they will tell ya what ya need. They are knowledgeable and up to date. Just have to know what block ya have.

What about the machine work for the Pro-gram's caps? Are they ready to go so all you have to do is line bore and hone and your good? Or are they like the eagle ones where you have to play with them to get them to work after line bore and hone?

In order to register correctly in the block, all caps require machining.

I know that if you are converting a two bolt to a 4 bolt you will need the stepped register.

Not true.

We never use stepped caps, what is the point of upgrading to a stronger cap if you are not going to take it all the way and move the register point towards the pan rail, this increases rigidity of the whole setup.

So i should get the flat ones and tell the machine shop to spread the registers out on the block?

Yes - make sure that they have done those conversions before.

Another vote for the flat caps. And, as was said before, best it is to find a shop with a good history of this process.
